I thought about this dilemma that mini 14 users face and I have come to the conclusion that the comparison the AR15 is really never going to go away. But the truth about the debate is that both systems have been around a while and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Some are going to buy both and others are going to buy one or the other. I think that the people who go in that direction (buy one) are usually the ones to debate the differences and criticize. It is human nature to defend one's choices and go against what is different, even though the argument may be right or wrong. Either way I agree that the AR 15 likeness point has no place here, as most are here to teach others or learn. And it really only discourages the people who are here to learn (like myself). Sorry to beat the dead horse.....

I surely do like my wood M1A. So do a lot of other purist. When the EBR came out and turned the M1A into a whacky dodad ARish platform, it was well received ------ because it perpetuated the species. I'll keep my wood one but if you have a whandangoish EBR you need to unload, I'm right here.

As to the continual gripes on all boards about someone else's idea, it seems there are always those that need to feel superior with their choices over someone else's. I kinda feel sorry for those limited thinkers but do wish they would stop always stating they know what is best for everyone else - and just go straight into politics.

I think the mini-14 is an underestimated rifle and I would put my 600dollar mini up against any AR in that price range. In accuracy, function, sustained fire, any way you want to slice it. The only AR thats better than my mini is the one that cost 1000-1500 bucks. Let me spend $600 more on my mini and it will stack up with the best AR's out there.

Politics or Religion! Good point man. Doesn't everyone love the Jehovah's Witnesses who show up unannounced to peddle you their faith. I personally don't care what you choose to believe, or support. I just don't want you to try to shove it down my throat!

I have seen a Ford Tempo with 240,000 miles on the original engine and the owner claimed " it just won't quit!"

how long do you expect the average Ford tempo would last, dear sir?

Some of the reasons I bought my mini 14 tactical was: cost over an AR, I wanted a 223/5.56 rifle, and I wanted something different from an AR. I researched the Mini here and in other venues and made my decision. I come here to look for information as to how I can improve my mini by adding a different stock, different rings, etc. Reasoned discourse is always appreciated.

I can relate completely to your experience. I too liked the cost, caliber, and the look. I did research on other forums and see the Mini 14 getting knocked, mostly by AR 15 fan boys, for its poor accuracy, and it's mag selection (a few years ago). I like to research my purchases before I buy them and the best insight into a product is from the people who own them and use them with frequency. Not someone who owns something else, spouting propaganda. It is up to you to decipher what info is useful and what is useless. I am very happy with my decision, great unique rifle, with a good following!!

After watching Mr. Lockandload's video on you tube titled Mini 14/30 and SKS (found here) i can understand why some of you guys are tired of hearing the comparisons. What grinds my gears is the majority of the arguments against the Mini 14 aren't even valid, or are just wrong.

#1 The mini 14 is almost the same price as an AR15, and the mags are more expensive.

-Out of the box this isn't even close. (except for the mags, which are a little pricey but are well made) a piston AR is in the $1400 range, and that is the closest AR that I would compare to the mini as far as I'm concerned. Sure there are some cheap AR's available but to get it down to a price relative to a new Mini 14 you would need to build it yourself, or end up with a "cheap rifle".

#2 The mini is a varmint/ranch rifle and not a WROL rifle.

-Well if that were true then why do various police forces, military, and corrections use the rifle across the world? And the 5.56 is very capable of killing, and has been used exclusively as an infantry cartridge since Vietnam. This argument has been gone over several time on this forum.

#3 The mini 14 is not as accurate as an AR 15.

-Now this is big one, and may hold some weight in the discussion. Out of the box the AR probably does have better accuracy. But does a few inches really matter in a close combat situation? Both rifles were designed for CQ engagements under 200 yards. Also the mini 14's reliability and less frequent cleaning/maintenance makes up for this in my mind.

#4 Mini 14 doesn't allow for accessories or aftermarket expansion like the AR.

-This may have been true years ago, but recently there has been a push to produce aftermarket accessories to meet the demand. Also Ruger has designed the newer rifles to accept a wide variety of different scopes, lights, bipods, etc. This may depend on the stock you choose, and may require some ingenuity on your part to get it how you like it.

#5 The Mini 14 is just for people who can't afford an M1A.

-This also may be true in some people cases, but were are talking about 2 different calibers and 2 different rifles. The .223 and 5.56 are way cheaper that .308 and more readily available. This is one thing that I happen to see eye to eye on with Mr. Lockandload. If I can't afford to stockpile it, train or practice with it on a regular basis I don't even bother. I wouldn't go plinking with an M1A. M1A is definitely a great WROL of SHTF rifle no doubt, but I think the Mini 14 is simply a variant of the M1A with a different cartridge.
