I hope this will help you--- direct quote from instruction manul for the mini 14 re: Ammunition
"The Mini 14 Rifle is desgned to use either standardized U.S. military, or factory loaded sporting .223 (5.56mm) cartridges manufactured in accorance with U.S. industry practice."
