I just saw this pad in the Brownells catalog..my question is,Is this pad similiar to the Choate? Or is it flush with the sides of the stock, where as the Choate sticks out a little?

Mine sticks out about 1/16" on the sides (factory birch stock).

About the only thing I've seen on some recoil pads/butt plates, is "some" say, for wood stocks only, not for synthetic stocks. Maybe something to look out for.

I put the Masen pad on my Ranch (wood stock). Fit was pretty good with no trim required. Better than I can say for the Pachmayr (supposedly prefit) that I put on my Rem.
