I'd say ya stand a chance of some pretty good groups and I base that on what I hear others convey. The birch stock "might" be a tad tighter than the walnut and then theres always the synthetics that are generally a tad tighter yet. Then theres the fact as to whether your using irons or a scope? Ya certainly have a good choice on the ammo altho at times it can be a tad high and most I know shoot Milsurp Port ... S. African ... Hirt and a few others out there and do quite well with the ball ammo ...

Keep us posted when ya wag 'er to the range and good luck! ;)

1911's that would do better than that. Even 2"@100 yds would mean that you'd have a lot of shots off of a man's chest at 600 yds, even without wind or mirage considerations. How is that better than an AR15 and 223?

2 - 4" at 100 yards with iron sights is generally considered SOP for military rifles . That is with military ammo .

The M1A is a semi-auto clone of a M-14 .

With iron sights , it has to be big enough to see it before you can hit it .

Did not say the accuracy is better than a mouse gun & .223 . The terminal rffects are greater .

I once shot a 1" three shot iron sight group with an 03A3 . Quit right there before I ruined my bragging rights . :) Can not see well enough to do it any more .

I have a 1/2 worn out garand that will do 2" w/ LC 69 , if the eyes corperate . 1-5/8" with match ammo . With iron sights and a well used rifle ( that is utterly reliable ) , that ain't nothing to sneese at . I certainly do not want anyone shooting at me with it !

Now as far as scoped rifles , I have a bull barrel AR upper that will put them in from a quarter to a dime , depending on the ammo & the phase pf the moon and the shooter's skill .

God Bless

From any of the real BE gunsmiths. Clark, Wilson Baer, can all deliver a 1911 guaranteed to group 10 shots into 2" at 50 yds. Most of those will group 5 shots into 1.5" at that range. Such guns group 4" at 100 yds. I once printed a 3 shot group with each of 4 different loads at 100 yds, from a Lee Machine Rest. The best 2 two were sub 3" with factory 185 gr swcs, Win and Rem. The 3rd was 4"., with Federal match ball The forth was 4.5", with my reloaads and my cast bullets (lee swc's)

Well I just had to find out. I picked up the birch stock standard M1A and the 6x40 gov. scope and mount package. I got a chance to try it out today and found a load it likes,44gr. of 4064 and a Nosler 150 bt went into 1 1/4" for 5 shots at 115 yds. So I think the new M1A maybe a keeper .
