I have been thinking of buying an M1A for match shooting. I am looking at the National Match. Currently I use a mini 14 that I sent to Accuracy Rifle Systems to have tricked out. Are the M1A that much better? Alot of guys shoot them ( namely the guys that always beat me. lol

An M1A is a great base for a match gun.

Frankly, while I'm glad you've built up an accurized Mini-14, accurizing an M1A is likely to give you a lot better performance during competition, dollar for dollar. The entry fee is high, though.

Tell the M1A shooters that you are thinking of buying one and ask if you can shoot a few rounds through one of theirs at a target to see how it compares to your Mini-14.

If you buy a M1A, a standard will pretty much shoot with a national match as long as you install a install a synthetic stock and smooth out the trigger, if needed. You can get a new condition military issued synthetic stock extremely cheap.

I have a Springfield M1A for sale. I have no choice in the matter. The IRS is breathing down my neck and it will cost more to fight them then they say I owe. This rifle is a great shooter (1.5 MOA with my reloads). It has a military issue fiberglass stock that has had the reciever area glassed in. Nice tight fit with no select fire cut outs. I have 2 military 20 rd mags and 1 springfield armory 10 rd mag. I bought it new 3 yrs ago. The barrel is a Winchester manufactured in Feb 1962. It came from the factory with this barrel. 4 groove 1:10 twist. It loves 175 grain HPBT match bullets. Reload data goes with the rifle.

When I first started shooting NRA highpower in the late 80"s the M14/M1-A was on the cutting edge and AR15(mouseguns) where looked down on. Today it is just the opposite. The AR15 rules the NRA highpower firing line and M14/M1-A shooters(the few left that are still holding on) are for the most part no longer competive). The M14 might have a slight advantage at 600, but the AR's eat the 14 alive at 200/300 rapid fire. Its all about less recoil to knock you out of postion, 1x8 twist HB, free floated AR barrels, etc. Price also: you can pick up a AR15 match grade for around $1200.00 that will shoot master level scores right out of the box, thats not even half way to a match grade 14.

It's worth every dime.You'll never know till you own one.I have AR's,Mini's,AC556,H&K 91 & 93,etc,etc.If I could only have one rifle for the rest of my days,it would only be the M-14.The 15/16 has a little rapid fire advantage at close range but when the chips are down it dosen't even come close to the 14.The 14 wasen't designed to wound,it was designed to kill.Period.If you need to punch threw doors,walls,glass,etc to hit your target it will do it with ease.The 15/16 is about done at 300 while the 14 will do the job at 1000. It has no plastic & no aluminum.Don't get me wrong,the 15/16 has its place.I'll shoot men with it out to 200/250,after that it's 14 time.Yes,you can have 3 ARs or Minis for one custom M-14.But you can also have 3 Toyotas for one BMW.If you want the best/most,it costs.I could go on explaining all day but words won't do it justice.You have to own one,shoot it under various conditions/ranges,caress it at night,and you'll understand.:sniper:

Not to change subjects (which I am about to do), how do you like your 91? I have one, which I just ordered the wide forearm and bipod for. I invariably forget to bring sandbags to the range and the rifle is a bit too heavy to shoot by itself. I was wondering how decent youre groups are.
Maybe we need an H&K forum??

In across the course NRA Highpower shooting(200Yds-600Yds) the M14 is now a dead end rifle. If you shot the Highpower game you would quickly see. I do agree with many of your other points: harder hitting, cycles under advise conditons etc. With the AR 1x8 twist barrels and 80 grain bullets accurate shooting with the AR out to 1,000 yards is obtainable. It is my understanding that AR's are being used out to 1,000 yards by military marksmenship units at Camp Perry.

Britt,what you write it true.The 15/16 is used at those ranges,in matches.I'm talking about the real world if your life depended on it.I wouldn't want to shoot a man with an 80 grain anything at 1000.By using the 223 like this it is being pushed to the raged edge.I'm sure those match shooters would also want the 7.62 at 1000 if they were under fire.I am very familiar with the highpower game and thats the ONLY place I've ever seen the 223 used at those ranges.Its just not reliable enough.Varment hunter don't even use the 223 at those ranges because it won't reliably kill rodents.:sniper:


bugdrvr,I LOVE my 91.Hell yes,an H&K forum would probably go great here.I average about 1 1/2 at 100.But it's not suppose to be a match rifle.Mine has a set trigger on it so that may be cheating a little.The bi-pod is the best I've ever seen because it folds into recesses in the stock and is completly out of the way!Next to my 14,the 91 is my choice of single weapons.

than I'd pay even $1000 for an M1A (much less the other way around) The AR kicks butt on the 600 yd line of the Service Rifle matches, and it's ammo for doing same cost about half of the price of match 308 ammo. 1000 yds is a fantasy with battle rifles. When you are being shot at, and the targets are dodging, and using cover, you will miss a lot at 100 yds. That is a fact, man.
