Sen. Lugar answered a letter I recently sent him concerning my opposition to expanding background checks and registrations and a desire to reduce the red tape involved with purchasing firearms. This is the letter he sent me. I hope his voting record will coincide with his response, which while not perfect in my mind is a good start.

Dear Mr. XXXXX

Thank you for contacting me.

I am mindful of the Consititutional and practical complications inherent in broad Federal registration proposals. I believe that the Federal and state resources devoted to gun crimes are more productively spent on aggressively prosecuting gun crimes and on improving the background check system that is aimed at preventing criminals from obtaining guns.

Law enforcement has not done enough to arrest and prosecute criminals who use weapons or those who attempt to illegally obtain them. Initiatives like Project Exile in Virginia have proven that if State and Federal authorities work together on vigourously prosectuing gun crimes, they can have a positive impact. The goals should be that any law-abiding citizen of age should be able to buy a gun under prefailing state law with as little inconvenience from the checks as possible. And any criminal who attempts to buy a gun illegally should be detected, arrested, and prosecuted.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.

Sincerely,

Richard G. Lugar
United States Senator

Hey Doc, he talks a good one lets just hope he means it. The law he was telling you about in Virginia I have never heard of. The only thing I can say that for two gun buys I was denied, but within a day was told I could pick up my gun. I was all for the instant check untill all of a sudden I can't have a gun when I want it . Hell I found it easier to get my wife to get it for me.AND NO I HAVE NOT BEEN CONVICTED OR CHARGED WITH ANY CRIMINAL

OFFENSE.I know of a state trooper denied a gun purchase becuase of the instant check. It just doesn't work properly.

Sounds like a bunch of politician double talk to me. We dont need politicians who are 'mindful' of the constitution. We need politicians who 'adhere' to the constitution.

http://www.vahv.org/Exile/ is the link to project Exile. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, quite honestly.

Luger's letter is just that, a letter. GOA keeps track of each congressman's votes, so a record speaks louder than anything else. Still, I though others in Indiana might be interested in his response and might like to write them themselves. The more people who contact him and pay attention to his voting (or any official, of course) the more say you will have in your own government. At least, that's the way I see it, but I was wrong once before. ;)
