·Sen. Lugar answered a letter I recently sent him concerning my opposition to expanding background checks and registrations and a desire to reduce the red tape involved with purchasing firearms. This is the letter he sent me. I hope his voting record will coincide with his response, which while not perfect in my mind is a good start.

Dear Mr. XXXXX
Thank you for contacting me.
I am mindful of the Consititutional and practical complications inherent in broad Federal registration proposals. I believe that the Federal and state resources devoted to gun crimes are more productively spent on aggressively prosecuting gun crimes and on improving the background check system that is aimed at preventing criminals from obtaining guns.
Law enforcement has not done enough to arrest and prosecute criminals who use weapons or those who attempt to illegally obtain them. Initiatives like Project Exile in Virginia have proven that if State and Federal authorities work together on vigourously prosectuing gun crimes, they can have a positive impact. The goals should be that any law-abiding citizen of age should be able to buy a gun under prefailing state law with as little inconvenience from the checks as possible. And any criminal who attempts to buy a gun illegally should be detected, arrested, and prosecuted.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.
Sincerely,
Richard G. Lugar
United States Senator
