I liked the old Ace with the floating chamber. The floating chamber allowed the .22 LR to develop the felt recoil of a 230 grs. .45 ACP. Target shooters did not like these barrels. But if you liked the feel of a .45 ACP for the cost of a .22 rimfire it was a fun gun. It was necessary to clean the chamber often.

Colt lost the edge YEARS ago, to other production mfgs. I had an old Series '70 Gov't that was junk from the Factory, needed more fine tuning than a race car! Forget about the Series '80 I tried, it was the Yugo of guns. I now have a Colt Comp Series '70, Factory finish is garbage, but at least the gun can hold a group, and digest what I put through it. As for the best 1911 out there, FAR from it! After I bought my TRP Op, I sold my finicky, overpriced custom guns, gave the Colt Comp to my Dad, and called it good. Not a better 1911 made out there, PERIOD! I don't care HOW much you overpaid for your Nighthawk, Wilson, Brown, etc....!

Yes.........the 1911 is fine for nostalgia and showing off........

But for self-defense most of us .45 shooters have gone to this:

Compact and.........oh yeah..........RELIABLE.

I'll stick with my 30. :D

Part of the Glock magic (aside from utter reliability) is that the Model 30 has the lowest felt recoil I've ever had the pleasure of feeling.

Pop in a Glock 21 magazine and you have 14 rounds of .45 ACP ready to go.

I've been shooting, and owning, 1911's for 50 years.
No reason to change now. Especially to some hunk of plastic.
If you need a defensive handgun that holds 14, 15, 17, or more rounds you may be living in the wrong place.

My most carried piece is a 5 shot J frame revolver. In all my years since I left the combat zone, I've never even had to draw let alone shoot.

That's pre-terrorist thinking.
