Jeff, I started out with Contender pistols a long time ago....After I started with Encore pistols I decided to try some carbine barrels to see how they shot against my Browning 1885 and Ruger #1...

I like them both ways....I have never fired a Contender in carbine configuration, I like them too much as pistols......Although I gotta admit that a 7-30 Waters carbine might be entertaining....

I got way too many Contenders and Encores and barrels an stuff to even pretend that I don't think they're swell.....

John

By the way, the most accurate barrel I own is a 14" Contender barrel in 30-30 Ackly Improved.....It outshoots my Bullberry 30-40 Krag and most everything else I own....

Contenderitis is a dreadful disease and Encoreitis is as bad or worse. Best as I can recall I now have 32 barrels not counting the 5 480 Encore barrels I bought to trade. I have a few that are "different" like a 7 1/2" 50-70 Contender barrel and a 376 Steyr Encore pistol barrel.

Well maybe so I dont have the disease quite as bad as you do.... I only have 2 Contender and 2 Encore frames and about 25 Contender bbls and 10 or 9 Encore bbls...

My accumulation is probably a lot more standard than yours is too.... About the only non standard barrels I have is 14" Bullberry 30-40 Krag bbl for the Contender and a 338-06 Ackley Improved Virgin Valley 26" for the Encore.....

Now all I need is time to shoot them......

My Stash is an old frame contender with octogen barrels:
22, 222, 30-30, & 44 mag with shotshell cutter. Have three or two boxes of the original contender shot shells. They have the price on them of 5.95 a box. Doan think they make um any more.

Then the new frame with carbine barrels:
21" 22 Match and 21" 30-30. Love both of them. Shoot squirrels with the match-still using iron sights.

Then one collectors item:
30 harriet (SH087) one of five hundred-not for firing. Jeff has seen this one. He tried to steal the wood.

One encore: 25-06 and 50 cal 209 in long barrels
Extra set of wood furniture for regular barrel-doan have the barrel yet and doan know what it will be either.
One 15"22-250 barrel
one 10" 7mm-08

Now here is the problem: I need another encore frame and some hand grips etc to shoot the pistola barrels and then I will need all the other stuff necessary like rings, mounts and all the other stuff.

I am not in the class with you two, but I been around longer than yall have and these are good guns to live with.

Knew there was some talk about a new forum, but did not know it was in existance until I went slumming this mourning. Shame on yall for not letting anyone know. Homer is an addict also, have yall told him or have I not read far enough yet.

I don't have many contender barrels. Favorite is ss. 12'' 45-70. I have several from 22 on up and enjoy hunting with them. Have 3 xp-100's 221,6br & 7br. Just got a 480 Ruger to add to revolver drawer in safe. It joins Freedom Arms 454 7.5'' , F.A. 357 Mag 9'', 4'' blue Python and others. I recently traded for an original contender 4xxx frame and 45/410 barrel that looks great for its age. Guess I will keep this one. Hope everyone enjoys shooting the t/c as much as I do. Thanks, Wayne:usa:

Wal I ain't got me onena them dern thangs cuz I heard they won't shoot fer schmitt . . .

Onena them French made abroluettes thangs I mean.

But I gotta .357 Herrett, 10 inch factory TC barrel that shoots pretty good for an old fart that can't see. An I gotta 10 inch 22 RF barrel that'll outshoot most rifles and thass a fact. I gotta little Leupold 2 power scope on it so's I can aim it. But my pride and joy is bulit on a Contender frame that Splendid gave me. It's a TC 21 inch carbine barrel, match chambered for the .22 RF. It's gotta nice American walnut factory TC butt and fore stock and the butt stock is thumb hole. TC made these in the custom shop until it burned but then never made them afterwards. It'sa squirrel killing machine and if I could jiss see, I could kill a sack full of'em right offa the front porch at Pair-A-Dice. Kilt six wiff six shots lass time I tried it down there but I hadda walk out inna woods to do it dang it.

But I doan know if these TC's is gonna be around long boys. They may be jiss a passing fad. I remember shooting them back about 1974 or 5 and everybody tole me then that they wuz jiss a fad and they wouldn't lass. I think thass about tha time Splendid took out a second mortgage on his house and bought his furss one. He's been grinning ever since then too.

Y'all need to get him to tell y'all about a beaver he kilt with his 44 magnum TC. It wuz a beaver that ate his Cypress tree down at Camp Pair-A-Dice. It'sa good story and he needs to tell y'all.

Oh yeah, and he sleeps wiff a Contender too. Jiss thought y'all would wanna know that.

There is not cure for all I want. My little 21" match barrel does the aiming when I am shooting tree rats. First time out got 4 for 4 in the head. Next time out 7 for 8 with one shot. The last one was running, but we got um. Now, I know this is shooting like Jeff so it must be the rifle doing the shooting and not me. It will make an expert out of a amature. I do probably have all the contedner stuff, now it is off to the Encore business.

Gonna have me one of them little 22-250 hand gunnies as soon as all the parts are assembled.

1. Cisco is holding my frame
2. Have the barrel and scope base
3. Need Tasco Rings-Black Prince gave me some, but they on the 25-06 barrel with the Veri X II scopey I got from him.
4. Have Tasco Scope the Black Prince provided me on the 22 10".
5. Gotta go to ED's and get some grips and a forarm.
6. Buy some ammo and sight it in.

Practice Practice Practice ifins it is a keeper!!!!!

Splendid, that is well,...splendid shooting. That cheap pistol scope that KYODE mentions above sounds like a good one from all that I have read. www.crankyfarmer.com have the NcStar 2-7X32 for about $38. I'm going to order a couple and try em out.
That 22-250 handgun should be just right for exploding possums on the half shell.

Rubber Grips and Forarm are due to be shipped from ED's Tuesday. Purchased the ammo today. As soon as I get to Pair of Dice which I think will be next week end, then I will pick up the frame from Cisco. Should be ready to go. Praying the barrel is a shooter.

Let's see what I've got is ( I'm gonna count my two son's cause theys in my safe and I paid for im) 6 ss encore frames, 8 barrels 24" 7-08, 26" 7mag, 3- 209x50, 15" 7-08, 15" 308, 15" 223. 1 contender frame ( not nearly enough) 7-30 waters 14" hunter, 223 14" hunter, and 10" 22match. I must not be as affluent as you are, but I am trying to keep my sanity. The only way I have been able to accomplish that is by obtaining more of the the good stuff: Encore barrels etc. Have all the Contender items that i will ever need. Fixing to purchase a nice scope for the Contender Carbine barrel "30-30" and then I will slow down for a while. Each time the illness hits me, I have to start my medicine over again. If I was you, I would place all the blame as JD Hinton's. Did he notify you of the illness? Did he not explain what happens to a person when he has the illness? It is all his fault in your case!! I have had mine since Big Buck was a pawn shop down on the low side of town and Charlie could hardly pronounce the work Contender. Bought my first one there with BP looking on for a whole $105.00 including tax. It is a pre 1980 in the ole style and it has four barrels to support it. (22, 222, 44 mag with shot shell, and 30-30) Also, have 2 and a partial box of shot shell ammo made by Thomson of which they do not produce any more. It will take another page to list the newer frames and the stuff that goes with them.
Later: Can never catch up with Cisco, he has all the toys.

Splendid, he didn't say a thing about tha illness. He just opened up that gunroom door and said LOOK AT ALL THESE PRETTY GUNS. That old dog does have some nice stuff. Think I'm gonna start the adoption process so he'll be my pa and he can leave it all to me.:D
I remember that pawn shop downtown. Back then I couldn't afford $10 for a gun, was trying to keep Russell in milk and diapers.

I could not either, but BP was my leader and was prodding me on. I had a little construction company and Charlie wrote it up as a power nail gun. I could not justify spending that kind of money at the time. You could buy a ruger blackhawk for $65.00 and it shot 6 times. I could not believe what I paid for the thing and then it shot above my wildest expectations. Who could believe a handgun could shoot that good. Then when you see Jeff, you just do not know what to believe. HEeeeeeeeee.

Later: Splendid Ha Ha

Well,I guess I ain't got Contender-itis as bad as you boys.

All I got is one frame and three barrels-a 10 inch octogon 221 Fireball,a 14 inch 357 Maximum and a 12 inch Hunter in 45/70.

That Fireball will shoot 1/2 inch all day if I'm having a good day (which is rare now with my neck being so bad-it gives me the shakes). The Maximum will do about MOA,and I never wasted time working up a load with the 45/70.Dumped some Re7 in it and topped it with some Hornady 300 grain HPs and it shot 2 1/2 inches at 100 yards which is more than fine for me for that big of pistolgun.

Gonna do some deer huntin with the 45/70 barrel this year, mostly cuz I can walk down the street to my new favorite huntin spot with it in a shoulder holster and nobody'll know.Gonna have to use a bike with a scabbard on it for usin a riflegun, and I doan like that none no.

I doan know WHUT I'm gonna do ifn I actualy kill sumptin back there.Them BMW drivin' Democraps will upchuck their lattes ifn they see me walkin down the street with an old dead buck slung over my shoulders.

Hey,that's an idea.......:D

WB, you and I are kinda' poor relations in this club, I guess. I've just got one frame. Like the 10" oct. barrels. I've got a non-match .22 LR that must THINK it's a match grade, because it would out-shoot my M-39 Marlin, and the Marlin wasn't any slouch, either. Then got a .221 FB. My favorite barrel's a .256 Win. Mag. and I even scored 750 rds. of original brass. Forming cases isn't any picnic, but I DO love to shoot that barrel. Blast is more pleasant than the .221 and those .25's hit a lot harder than .22's.

Then there's the .30 Herret - the only round "bull" barrel I've got. Took my first handgunned deer with this one, and with a 125 gr. Nosler BT, was VERY impressed with the damage it did. Darn fine caliber, even if some folks DO call it "obsolete," whatever THAT is supposed to mean. Have the forming dies, complete with inside neck reamer. A pain to form cases for, but may well be the best 10" caliber going - probably a smidgen "better" than a 7mm. TCU, though I don't think anything shot with them could tell the difference between the two.

Then there's the .357 oct. 10" barrel, and another .357 I had reamed out to the Maximum. Hard to decide whether to shoot the Herret or the Maximum on my next foray after venison.

I also like the older pattern, smaller grips. Just make the whole gun feel REAL NICE, I think, and handle really splendidly. I've got iron sights on the .357 and a red dot on the Maximum. Have a 2x Leupold on the Herrett, so if I go back under the tall pine canopies, I'll use the Maximum, with its red dot. If out in more "open" country, I'll go with the Herrett.

I've got the camo colored syn. rifle butt and forend for tapered barrel. I need to get a .22 LR Match blued barrel and maybe a 7x30 Waters or .30/30 to match. Maybe a .22 Hornet or .223 would be nice, too, but don't have them yet.

For everyday shooting of no particular intent or type, just "messin' around" shooting, I'll take that little .256 ANY day. Darn flat trajectory, mild recoil, enough "whoomph" to whoomph whatever needs whoomphing - what more could a man want???? I like the 75 gr. bullets, mainly the 75 gr. Hornady HP and the 75 gr. Hornady V-Max. I think the V-Max is probably the better bullet for all around use, but the HP is a little cheaper and punches fine lil' holes in whatever needs a hole in it. Then too, "messin' around" with a Contender 10" oct. is a right nice way to pass a little time. That's my take on it, anyway.

If anyone has a blued - or even a stainless - .22 LR carbine barrel, let me know. I may just add something to the collection. I do have a Super 14 .30/30 barrel I permanently added a 2 5/8" extension to, and made it a "recoil compensator." For ONCE, it worked better than intended. I can shoot it off bags with the pistol grip, and there's NO MOVEMENT AT ALL when the trigger's pulled! Since I drilled all the holes myself, nobody was more surprised than me at the way it worked. Cuts down the flash, too, so back up under a tall, thick pine canopy, it'll really be nice not to be blinded when I pull the trigger. Neat little barrel. I'd trade it for a .22 LR barrel, though. I just don't think I'll ever really use it for deer, with so many other guns to take afield, but I think I really would USE a .22 LR. Anyone interested in a trade????
