I feel like I am cheating on my Mini-14!

I had recently obtained a late CR6920 "Colt Carbine", but it was really just a Colt "assembled gun" with laser engraved lower instead of roll marked. It was made up of sub-contracted parts: a Rosco barrel, Schmidt LPK ( marked ), and some handguards that were not nearly as robust as the Colt handguards of 20 years ago, and even an unmarked BCG. I always felt like it was a "sort of" Colt. It was like any AR I built, but a Colt receiver. Sold it for another project and went back to shooting the Mini-14 GB

Well, working part time at a local gun shop I grabbed a Colt 6400C Match Target M4 Carbine. Date by serial number (and from the owner who sold it) is about 2002. The 6400C is a ban era gun, and has a Fixed lower receiver extension and pinned M4 stock, and a factory installed muzzle brake. It has the large pin FCG and "horseshoe" BCG.and Colt factory side sling swivel. Forge codes are Diemaco (Canada) and splintered A Anchor Harvey upper forge codes, and Keyhole - 4 (Cerro Forge) carry handle forge codes. It is also roll-marked "Colt Defense" which is neat.

I replaced the fixed M4 tube and stock with a Colt 4 position tube and a Fiberite CAR-15 light weight stock, and the bulky M4 handguards with slim CAR-15 handguards fron a Colt 6420 Patrol Carbine. It has a stock block and Sparrow Dynamics non-pistol grip to make it Commiefornia legal. I also replaced the "horseshoe" BGG with a current issue Colt M16 BCG. It is 100%^ Colt M4.

I took it to the range a week or so ago. I was shooting IMI 77 grain. OTM MK262 MOD1. Using the carry handle iron sights. first I was breaking clay pigeons on the 100 yard berm, then I was smashing the pieces of clay pigeons with subsequent shots. With the factory H buffer, the MK262 did not seem to have any harder recoil impulse than M193 55 grain. It is the most accurate 223 weapon I have ever owned, For the first time since I sold my SP1 AR15 carbine in 2000, I have a real Colt.

While it will never replace my 1981 Mini-14 GB Model as my favorite gun, the Colt is what I would grab to fight a war with!

BEFORE when I got it:

After I put the CAR-15 furniture on it.

I am 70, and have built probably more than 100 to 150 ARs since 1986 (I had an FFL and business assembling and selling ARs from 1988 to 2007). I had a Colt SP1 AR15 carbine from 1986 to 2000, and loved it, even though I used Minis and M1 Carbines as LEO trunk guns. Only reason I sold it was I was forced out on disability in 2000, and sold mucho stuff to keep my kids in college. Until I got the 6920 last year, I had not had a "Colt AR-15" since then. The 6920 being just a Colt assembled weapon did not scratch my itch for a real Colt. Not only is the 6400 definitely a REAL Colt, the match target M4 barrel is stupid accurate!

One reason I say I would grab my Colt 6400C if I had to fight a war, is ammo. My 181 Series GB is really limited to 55 grainers. The Colt, with its 1/7 twist loves 55, 62, and especially MK262 MOD1 77 grainers. The 77s have a significant increase in lethality over 55s, as well as extended range. My nephew was a Marine Sgt. in Afghanistan, and used 7s he got from Spec Ops operators to use his M16A4 with a 20" barrel to eliminate Mujahadin at 400-500 meters!.

Another reason is the M4s Stanag magazine usage. I have as many 30 round USGI M16 mags as I do Mini-14 factory 20s and 30s put together, and I have a dozen of each of those!
