Hey folks,

I'm new to the Perfect Union, but DAMN glad I found this place! :D

I'm working on a 10/22 now and have plans for a Mini 14 (and an M1A if I win the lottery ;)) in the future - now I know where to find hints and tips for everything in one great location.

Speaking of tips, what brand/type of 10/22 bull barrel is the best for a low budget? I'd like to spend not more than $150 if possible. Adams & Bennett, Butler Creek, Shilen and Volquartsen(kinda pricey for me) are some I'm looking into. Any other makes you guys could recommend?

Does the length make a big difference - 16" vs 18" vs 22" - for accuracy? How about material? I kinda like the carbon fiber sleeved look, but is it better?

Thanks in advance!

Hey beta, I have heard a lot of favorable reports on the GM. Best bang for the buck. I have a A&B 18" SS fluted, i'm putting together, so haven't gotten to fire it yet. I am ordering the 20" GM SS for my other project (they are on BO.)

The barrel length dosen't effect the accuracy, so barrel length is more of a personal thing. My personal opinion is I like the heaver barrel for offhand shooting, as I can hold it steadier, and also for bench rest, as it helps with the recoil. I also highly recommend a bolt buffer, as the recoil against the steel bolt stop pin will eatup your alum receiver.

Thanks for the reply cajungeo, by GM do you mean Green Mountain?

With regard to the weight, that's interesting - I wish I could shoot a few different barrels before shelling out the cash - which is what I'll probably do anyway! :D

After reading alot about the 10/22, the bolt recoil buffer was the first part I bought - even before the gun!

PS: I gotta have some cajun in me somewhere, you can't spell my last name without EAUX! ;)

I got mine from Midsouth, and they were cheaper too. Got it in 3 days.:D

The 20 inch SS bull is heavy. I can shoot it offhand, but will use it for target, and shoot it from a bench rest or bipods.

My 18" SS fluted will be my squirrle & rabbit gun.

To get the barrel that you like, go to a large gun show. The one I go to in Houston, has all kinds of barrels/guns to check out. Some hunters like lite guns, and wouldn't want to carry around a heaver rifle even if it is more accurate.
