I have a stainless Mini-14 with a factory synthetic stock. When you shake the gun, it rattles like a bucket of bolts. The factory sling swivels on the gas block and the stock are the worst offenders. The op rod, though, makes it's fair share of noise. Not exactly the best tactical situation.

Does anyone have any clever remedies to this problem?

My Uncle mike swivels don't make any noise, or I'm going deaf. I installed a sling swivel stud in my forstock, installed uncle mikes QD swivels, and removed the gas block swivel. I used to have a recoil buffer around my gas pipe. It kept my slide rod from rattling. It worked great for about 500 rds. The heat finally got to it.

When I was in the Marines, I taped my m-14 swivels to get rid of that tinkle sound. I could sneak up real close. ;)

BTW was just looking at where my front swivel used to be. I bet I could drill the hole all the way thru, then dress down the gas block swivel lug a bit, and Uncle mike would fit!

cajungeo,

I did exactly that with my front swivel. Drilled the hole thru and fitted an uncle mike's QD swivel up front(as well as the rear) that was wide enough(1"?) for a military cotton OD sling ala M1 carbine or Garand. Always liked those slings. :)

I use the factory swivels with a 1" Uncle Mikes leather military type sling and don't have any problem with the swivels rattling. However, the sling does bind on the gas block when you adjust it unless you hold the rifle upside down or suspend it from the sling while making the adjustment.

As an aside, Springfield Armory makes a 11/4" leather military type sling that is an outstanding product and it isn't that much more costly than an Uncle Mikes. It is a couple of ozs heavier if weight is an issure and a 11/4" won't fit the factory swivels. I use one on my 700.
