Just out of curiousity, how many Mini-14s do you own? I have two. I never buy just one of any firearm that I intend for defensive purposes. I like to have a backup gun in case one goes down. Both of mine have had the barrel shortened by DRC.

I am thinking about a third one. You can never have too many guns. The problem is finding room in the gunsafe.

I only have one right now but my wife really needs one. But then I'll probably start drooling all over hers (and she'll put her foot down about me hogging it) and I'll have to get another one. Three sounds about right. But we're gonna have kids sometime...

My safe holds 10 and I've got a few in the closets.

Don't learn the hard way like I did!
I thought the exact same way UNTILL my house was robbed when I was on a trip! Then found out homeowner's insurance does not cover S_IT!! For the cost of my $1600.00 fire-proof safe,I would have come out way ahead(versus the cost of the guns I lost that insurtance would'nt cover)!!

But,for the record,I have 5 mini-14's all factory folders! (too much A-team as a child??)

I like the looks of your Mini on the right side of the picture. What kind of barrel treatment did you do to it ? Looks like some type of cooling shroud.Did you make it yourself ? Does it help barrel harmonics/shot grouping ? Inquiring minds want to know. How does that scope take recoil ? Thanks.:2guns:

I only have the one, although kid wants to get his own. I figure at his age, he can spring for it, I have my own addiction to pay for! As for gun safes, I highly recommend them. I too was broken into, and thankfully the guns were all locked away except for a couple that the no-name beggars didn't find. Darn good thing, as my wife surprised them when she came home for lunch. Could have been bad. I'd hate for one of my guns to be stolen then used to kill or injure.

I have my safe on layaway at the moment. My little arsenal is building up and it is making me nervous that they are unprotected. I myself have had a firearm stolen before and it annoyed me to the max even till today. I do not presently own any mini-14s but I do own a mini-30.

Another thing is to record the serial #, and keep in a seperate safe place. The cops will sometimes take the serial #, and check pawn shops, or if they take it in on some crime, you may get it back one day.

I do believe that the best way is a safe, and get a big one if you can. My small collection has outgrown my safe by leaps and bounds. Getting too crowded. In the interim, do as Cajungeo says and record those numbers. A friend of mine recovered his in this manner. Until then, get as long of a bike lock cable you can find and run one end through the action. Then wrap it around the water heater. If your gun is used in a crime, I don't think you'll see it again.

I keep my mini 30, brownie a5 and sig sauer in a Homak safe. It's not fire proof or 1,000 lbs but it's pretty dang tough. You can bolt it to wall studs and I keep about 2,000 rounds in the bottom so it's pretty heavy. Will a committed thief make off with it, hell yes. But your everyday burglar with a duffle bag will see the two locks, give it a test push a realize it ain 't worth the time. Thats why we leave the silver candlesticks right out where everyone can see them ...hehe. I used to have my gear under the bed too and it drove me crazy. The Homak was worth the $200. And by the way - I want to buy another 30. I agree with davey 3 - you need redundancy. and PSS Goeth, that gas mask, with the filter out of the orig issued plastic rap, is probably useless. Go to www.approvedgasmasks.com. nice grenade though - great pic!!!!!

Hey Goeth 27,

How do you like that red-dot on your mini as compared to your scope? I'm thinking about ditching my scope and installing a tasco red dot? I've got a tasco pro point on a PC-9 and it's great.
(my brother is getting ready to put a red dot on his mini after shooting the pc9)

As to Dave 3006's thread,

I only have one Mini at this time and my reason for going with the mini over a MAK, AK or AR was because my brother also has a mini and if the shtf then we're cool.... If I ever pickup another mini, I'll put it into a bullpup configuration. More then likely my next purchase will be an SKS... you see my brother in law has one of these.......... Dave 3006's wise for going with interchangable equipment. Check out the Ruger pc9 or 4's and the p series autos, they can interchange clips... way to cool. Slap a 30rd clip in your p85, 89 etc. for a great time!

I have two right now. Both stainless with folding stocks. I only shoot one of them, the oldest one, bought in the early 1980s. I'am trying to find out how much shooting a mini will take before the barrel is shot out and accuracy goes to pot. Thousands of rounds down range so far and no sign of accuracy deterioration. Function flawless also. The mini just keeps rocking on.

One, a folder. The serious guns are M1As, as they have better energy, accuracy, and the mags have better consistency. The advantage to the Mini is that it is light, can use military ammo, performs well up close (for IPSC, etc.), and is useful for teaching others who may be recoil sensitive.

Dave, please tell us about the accuracy before and after shortening by DRC. Did you go for a 2" cut to 16.5", or what?

I was getting 6-8" before with the stock gun and Wolf ammo. When the barrel heated up, it was all over the place.

After the mod, with Wolf ammo, I get 3-4" groups. With better ammo, I am sure it would be 2-3" groups. I also have the large XS peep sight. A smaller apperture would be better for shooting groups.

The thing that was most important to me was the barrel heating up and shooting a shotgun like pattern.
