I need to clean up the wood on my garand and for that I obviously need to remove it. Getting the action out of the stock is easy, but how do I remove the upper handguard and the (for lack of the right term) front handguard? Your help is appreciated!

CAREFULLY!
In order to remover the front handguard you need to remove the gas cylinder. I would reccomend doing further research to get the correct manner in which to do this. It easy if you have the right tools, easy to screw up if you dont! Basically, you need to remover the gas plug (here's where you need the tools, a very large screwdrive may work but it's easy to mar up the plug, the cyclinder neeeds supports too, the right tool also makes it easy)
Then tap off the cyclinder and the hand guard will come loose.

For the rear handguard, after you remove the main stock, flip it over and see the hanguard clip. Take a punch and spread the clip off the groove and carefully pull the guard away.

Well, a few weeks ago I tore the rifle all the way down and refinished it. There was zero challenge in removing the gas cylinder. After removing the lock screw with a combo tool and unscrewing the retainer it just slipped right off. It's actually sort of loose on there. The stock came out OK, a lot better than it was before but not as light as I would have liked either. Anyhow, that's my update. I hope to get it out and shoot some this weekend, we'll see what the weather has in store for me I guess.

Well, it was a beautiful day here Saturday. I took the Garand to the range and put three clips though it. What a nice piece of equipment. The whole thing was very satisfying to shoot. Got about 3" groups at 50 yards. Poor shooting but I wasn't shooting for accuracy so I was happy with it. I'll try it at 100 with some patience next time.

If the gas cylinder is tight to the barrel & does not wobble , I reccomend against ever removeing it , unless you are willing to learn how to peen the splines , on the battel , to re-tighten up the fit ( the front sight is on the gas cylinder & if gas cylinder wobbles , so does the front sight ) .

Anyone that wants a FAQ condensed from Jerry K.'s book , on peening the barrel splines , email me & I will send it to you .
