Hi 1badassmagnum, I use a pair of electronic muffs. They allow me to hear the thrower go off when I am shooting skeet and allows me to talk at a normal volume when talking to others. :ar15:

I use foam ear plugs at the range or field when target shooting, plinking, also Peltor Mickey mouse's. They more than double the protection when combined with the ear plugs. The Peltors are also good on the flight line working around jet engines. When I hunt I use the sonic valve type plugs, as I will only be shooting 1 time per kill (well most of the time;) ). They allow me to hear almost normal till a shot kicks the little valves in. I may have a lot of grey hair, but I kin stills hea a skeeter burp.:D

Out side I use a pair of foam plugs. When I am at my indoor range I wear plugs and muffs. They are alound to shoot rifles up to .30-06 so I go for the extra protection. While hunting I dont wear anything.

I use rubber plugs that were custom made for my ears.

I had them made at a gun show, and the same lady does them for kids who have PE tubes in their ears (pressure equalization tubes are grommets through the ear drum for kids with chronic ear infections, and you have to keep your ears dry when you take a bath, swim, etc.).

Both of my daughters had PE tubes, so I dragged them off to the gun show at an early age and had the same plugs made. Comfortable, effective.

As an range master and fire arms instructor the need for electronic muffs is a must. I have to hear the drop of a hammer and yet be protected from muzzle blast. There are a lot of great electronic muffs out here but I really depend on and like the Tatical long ear stereo muffs. They are costly...about $175.00 dollars.....but your ears are worth all the protection you can give them.....

say what..........repeat please..............

I haven't sprung for electronic muffs yet or those game ears, but I really should. I went to a shoot last fall in TN where there were tons of machineguns and other rifles-a buddy told me to wear both foam ear plugs and regular ear muffs. I'm glad I did those .50bmgs and .50 bolt guns are loud!

I use inserts ( MAX plugs) & Muff's - electronic if needed & Peltor Ultimate 10's if electronic not needed.

Good Combo -

My wife uses the custom molded inserts and highly recommends them.

I'm just too cheap to change over.

I have been using plastic ear plugs but I am going to have to upgrade to electronics. I just went to the ear Doc, and he said at 29 I have the hearing of a 60 year old. Probably from too much loud music as a kid, but he jumped all over the shooting causes ear damage. What a jerk, he told me that unless I wanted to be deaf soon to stop shooting all together! He added that even electronics do a poor job, especially on already damaged ears. I am going to try to see someone else. I can reluctantly acknowledge the hearing loss ( I do say "Huh" a lot) but surely there is a good electronic option out there.

I'd get him to put something in writing so I could get my insurance company to pony up for some nice quiet suppressors for your existing "loud" guns to insure your remaining hearing is preserved.

You will want to look really carefully at the electronic's as the noise goes up before it is cut off. That's why I still wear the ear plugs - turn up the electronics so I can hear the commands through the plugs then when the boom starts the plugs hold the trauma off until the electronics cut off.

Also look at the NRR (noise reduction rating)of the electronics alone as the Peltor's I have don't have near the rating as the 10's.
