I was talking to a neigbor yesterday, and it happens that he has a Standard Mini-14. I mentioned that I have a Ranch Model and was willing to trade (I like the standard's sights better). He is an LEO, and can use a Mini-14 on the job, and he wants to add a tac sight on it and use it for tactical purposes. Mine is stainless; his is blued. He has fired <100 rounds; mine has never been fired. I have experience with the rifles, and my question is: is the stainless or the blued better, or is it just a matter of preference?

I appreciate all opinions,

I've never had a blued gun rust so ss doesn't have much of an advantage to me. Just keep a little oil on there, ss also looks kind of funny if you have a wood stock. FWIW, I'd trade my ranch for an equal condition standard model!

I appreciate that, fastang.. I just think that as I am not stoked by the look of "The Scoped Look," and if I can help a cop out and we are both happy, then it is all good with me!!

Thanks for your input.

Welcome to the forum CaveScout. There really isn't a big diff in blue versis stainless. I got stainless cause down here the humidity is very high. It rains 6 ft a year, and I live about 30 miles from the gulf. I use my mini for hunting, and wanted the stainless so I wouldn't have to worry about rust.

If you wanted the mini to use it with peep sights, I believe you made a good trade. As you know the ranch's rear sight is really a back up sight for a scope which your friend wants anyway so you both got what you wanted. So enjoy your new mini. ;)

i have owned both, the standard and the ranch, and i prefer the standard model over the ranch because i prefer the better sights that the standard model carries. one other thing the standard has over the ranch is that it doesnt sling brass 40 yards away. the ranch rifle has knocked out many a pickup windshield because it tosses brass so hard. my jeep sports a 5 inch crack in its windshield from my brothers RR when he shot across the hood.

The stainless is much more corrosion resistant, but I believe carbon steel is metalurgically superior in both metal-to-metal contact friction and strength. Ya pays your money an ya takes your choice.

The RR vs standard choice is clear if you want to mount a scope. Sounds like you both get what you want.
