First AR with a question

I just picked up a E.A. Co. Model J-15 and have a question.

There is a push button just below the charging handle on the right side, what is it's function?

This AR has the carry handle as part of the upper, overall there appears to be very little wear by the looks of the hammer and overall condition of the finish.

I payed $800, was that a good deal? The barrel is marked; .556 Nato 1/9 BAR.

Thanks,
Ray

Forward bolt assist-for making sure the bolt is all the way forward into "battery"position! note*(does not mean it takes batteries);)
The forward assist (which is what you are talking about) as Magno said it to ensure the bolt is completely forward in battery, if you look at your bolt carrier group you will notice a row of indentions running down the length of it on the right side.. This is what the forward assist contacts and pushes the bolt carrier forward into battery.
You will typically utilize this after conducting a brass check or chambering a round out of your magazine.
I gather you are a 1st time AR 15/gun owner. Read up and learn before you go to the range. I'm going to be brutaly honest. If you do something dumb, you will give all gun owners a bad reputation. Protect your rifle. If it gets stolen or miss used you will give all gun owners a bad name. Find a mentor. This is a serious responsibility. kwg
