Mini-14 and Ruger 10/22. It was fun. It would have been more fun had I not left all my magazines at home...

Mini is fine as a bolt rifle but a 10/22 is a bitch to reload single round, especially when your fingers are numb with cold and the bolt latch/release is a small thin sharp piece of metal.

Oh, yes - my shooting was abysmal. At 50 yards I used to shoot a longbow (no sights) with better groups than that...

I was shooting resting my forestock arm on support and I noticed that my 10/22 jumped to the right from recoil. Is that right or did I do something wrong?


Now a stock question.
The Hogue stock is a bit longer than the factory one. I am not sure but I think it feels a bit too long for me. I am 5'6". Anyone with the same height who could share experience?

If I do decide to shorten my Hogue OM by an inch, how would I fit a buttpad back so that it does not stick out?
I do not necessarily want to keep the Hogue's own rubber buttpad - there is no need to absorb recoil with .223. So I would consider replacing it with a buttpad that is:
1. Thinner - not essential quality but it would allow me to cut less from the stock
2. Less "catchier" on the clothes. That may be significant in a tactical situation.
3. Sturdier - it's the part that contacts the ground most often.
4. Firmer - in case I have to hit someone with it...

I saw replacement buttpads in the store and attaching them seems simple. But how does one go about making them fit flush with the stock? Do I cut the excess somehow?

Ideally, I would want a buttpad that would allow me access to the inside of the stock to store stuff.

Stock makers generally use a belt sander to shape the butt pad to the stock. A gunsmithing book should show you the exact technique.

Hey voruzon. I had to grin a bit, at your effort. I never forgot my magazines, but I did forget my ammo once. Jumping right: I believe a counter clockwise rifling will make your rifle jump to the right.

As far as the butt pad goes. There is a member who took off the Hogue pad, and put a AR? military butt plate, with a door on his mini. I was asking him what all he had in his butt compartment. If you chould do a search you may find it. I did a short search, but couldn't find it. Since these forums take up 2 or more hours every day, I just don't have a lot of extra time. All I remember is it was a hougue stock.

You will have 10 times the fun with the magazines. Bet you won't ever forget them again!

I saw that post and have been looking for such buttplate since but so far no luck.

Also, at 50 yards I adjusted the rear sight of the regular Mini as low as possible and it was hitting couple of inches too high. Is that normal?

Hey voruzon, I have a factory Ruger stock that is finished with truckbed liner that I'd trade you for the Hogue. The truckbed liner is lightly textured and very tough.It would also keep the look of your rifle basically the same.

I am not looking to get the final product in the most quick and efficient way - I would rather tinker with spraycans and powertools myself, the more tinkering, the better.
Maybe someone else would be willing to trade.

I believe I was aiming point blank - if that means that I was trying to hit the exact point I aimed at. It seems strange that at 50 yards there is no way to put a bullet under the point of aim at the limit of a sight adjustment. I believe the problem is going to get worse at longer distances - 75 - 100 yards, since the bullet should still be climbing the trajectory.
Since I do not plan to use open sights beyong 100-150 yards, that makes it a bit worrysome. Especially since I was shooting 55grn ammo and 62grn is supposed to impact even higher at such short distances.

Of course I need to shoot more before I make any conclusions.
The solution may include:
1. Drilling out the peep-hole with a lower center - it needs doing anyway, the standard one is too small for tactical use.

2. Installation of the gas block bushing and muzzlebrake that will reduce muzzle flip and possibly lower the POI. Possibly, because by the time slide hits the receiver, the bullet should be out of the barrel anyway, so reduction of muzzle flip and recoil may only help with comfort and re-acquisition rather than ballistics.

3. Putting some downward bend onto the barrel... Breathe, breathe! I am only joking...

"V", on #2. My reasoning was the same. BUT, I made a compensator and installed it--POI dropped noticably at 100 yds, took it off and it came back up. Reinstalled and it came back down. Changed the weight of the comp and it made little difference. Harmonics? Only the Shadow knows.. :usa: :ar15:

vorizon, You may want to try puting your front sight blade at 6:00. I think that will take care of your problem. Are you shooting off a sandbag with your left hand under the butt stock, allowing the muzzle to jump? Try holding the forestock with your left hand, anything that weights i.e. limits muzzle jump will lower POI.

I am holding the forestock with my left hand which in turn rests on a benchrest, applying some pressure backwards along the rifle - pushing it into my shoulder slightly. I guess I can try to grab it more firmly and pull it down instead of just supporting it, but what would I do shooting off-hand? I'd have to push up in order to support the weight in that case.

Anyway, I am a bit too impatient about it. With only 20 rounds through the rifle, it does not make sense to discuss those things now. I've ordered the scope, muzzle brake and some other stuff.

I've also ordered a Ciener 22lr conversion kit. My goal is to instinctively shoot off-hand at 50-yards. I would have to run through a lot of ammo to achieve that. I do have 10/22 but it does not feel the same as Mini.

It sounds like your gun is zeroed in at 200 yds. if you are shooting 2" high at fifty yards. I would do as cajugeo said. Hold low to compensate or add about an 1/8 inch to your front sight. That would bring you up to zero at fifty yards. my 02 cents **** dawg
