Dying Forum--How Much Difference Does the Name Make?

Obviously there is not much activity here compared to most gun forums.

I checked a few and they often have hundreds of people signed on or visiting.

Perfect Union had FIVE when I looked today.......and I was one of them......and the Political Forum and the Mini-14 and Mini-30 forums are the only active forums.

There are very few posts except by Vendors hoping to sell.

This is a forum on life support.

That's sad to see, especially when the owners invest in new and better software.

Why is the forum dying? Yes, there is political bickering that is totally unacceptable--that's another problem, but......what about the NAME?

When I Google "Gun Forums" I don't find this one called "Perfect Union."

The name seems odd and, even if you did somehow find it and see it, you might think it would be a forum about marriage or marriage counseling rather than a gun forum.

The name doesn't SAY ANYTHING......it doesn't provoke interest. It is null.

I say this with all due respect, but I think the NAME may have had a significant impact on the current situation. You have not attracted a good cross section of gun owners.

I don't know how names are chosen or what names might be available, but consideration of a name change might be a good step toward saving the forum.

I am new here and found this forum as I was searching for info on ruger mini 14s...otherwise I would have never found it...you are correct, that the name is misleading on what the forum is...a name that is not mistakable for content would be better, something that flows and doesnt throw it too far right or left so it will appeal to many ....

Maybe the "Perfect Mini 14 series Forum" would be better. But with the very recent format change, and fairly recent inconsistant, and seemingly irrational moderation, alot of us are leaving and going over to the "Marlin Owners" forum. marlinowners.con. Thier content and quality is much better than you find here. Go there and look me up! The name is the same.

Ok........but I really would like to see this forum succeed........I've been hanging around here for over ten years and I've been turned off by some of the bad behavior.

It could be saved, but the owner is going to have to get serious........change the name and clamp down on the people who insist on acting like out of control eighth graders.

Gee sounds like rats in the walls, you don't like it so change the channel.
As for the slowdown if you have spent as much time here as you say you have you know from spring thru summer it is always slow.
As far as changing to a more rat controlled format I do not believe that
will help. Want more people here a name change will not help, telling
others you know and trust will.
Give it a rest eggo I do not want to play by your rule book. Just cause
you think your always right does not make it so. I tolerate you to because you have good and bad points please allow the rest of us the same latitude.
Could be the reason for the slowdown is because of you, while you were on the sidelines we did fine.
I am active other sites as well some good some not so.
This site has been here for a long time and will continue just fine without
instituting your rule book.
The government is also telling me change is good, I don't believe them either.

Sparkie, times have changed. Forum owners get SUED or harassed out of business for allowing racism, bigotry, homophobic rants and threats of violence.

The current garbage simply can't and won't go on. It will stop or it will be stopped by forces of nature.

If you want an island of paranoia and hate you'll always be welcome on Parler.com. You can vent all you want there and save your gun talk for here.

:)

I don't mind the name, but the new format burns my eyes... gives me a headache. Too bright! I originally found this forum by googling gun models, same as I've found other forums. Could be called, "Fred's Forum" and wouldn't matter. People will find a forum based on an interest. No doubt the search terms that got me here were "Ruger Mini-30."

This site has really died down over the years since I joined in 2015. Not sure why. Holy Mackerel! It died down after I joined. Might be my fault.

Yes, good point, M92P........if Beck goes to the upper right and click on the three dots he will find the way to "Dark Mode" and that could help the brightness problem.

As 40nascar says, maybe changing the name to "Perfect Mini 14 series Forum" would be the best bet.

Or maybe "Around the Mini-14 Mini-30 Campfire."

Or "Official Mini-14 Mini-30 Compound." (That might sound too militant.)

Anyway, the Mini 14/Mini 30 area is the strength of the forum right now.

Just building on that might be the way to go.

Many gun forums have just eliminated political forums because they can't be controlled.

While a more topical name might help, a name alone does not make a forum.

"The High Road" is an extremely popular site whose name suggests nothing about guns. They are closely moderated and do not tolerate any name calling, politics or other divisive posts.

The members there have been known to refer people to this site when arcane questions about Mini's come up, as this is considered the most informative Mini site.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Here are the rules of that highly successful gun forum.

Welcome to The High Road, an online discussion board dedicated to the discussion and advancement of responsible firearms ownership. It is the declared mission of this board to achieve and provide the highest quality of firearms discussion on the Internet, a standard set by the discussion board "The Firing Line" in 1998.

Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of political affiliation, gender, religion, nationality, or stance on gun ownership. We aim to respect every point of view, as long as it is presented in a polite and factual manner. You only need to provide a name and a valid email address to participate. We do not sell that information to anyone.

There are only a few house rules:

1. All topics and posts must be related to firearms or 'Right to Keep and Bear Arms' (RKBA) issues.

2. Multiple user registrations are prohibited. If you have difficulties logging in or you wish to change your user name, do not re-register, email us at webmaster@thehighroad.org.

3. As a family-friendly board, we ask that you keep your language clean, and that starts with your chosen user name. If you wouldn't say it in front of your dear old Grandma, you probably don't want to say it here. This rule includes any inappropriate images.

4. Spamming, trolling, flaming, and personal attacks are prohibited. You can disagree with other members, even vehemently, but it must be done in a well-mannered form. Attack the argument, not the arguer.

5. You agree to respect the copyright of others. If you don't own the rights to something, do not post it unless you have received prior written permission from the owner. Absent that permission, please just link to it and provide a brief summary of the contents. This helps keep us all out of trouble.

6. Drive-by posting is not allowed. A drive-by is: (1) Starting off a discussion (thread) with the posting of a link, or other copied content, without any meaningful commentary describing what the link or copied content is about or what there is to discuss; or (2) posts with no meaningful or contributory content.

7. We cannot provide a comprehensive list of "Things Not To Say". Posts that are contrary to the above policies, or contrary to the mission of The High Road, or for any other reason deemed necessary may be edited or deleted at our sole discretion. Membership may be temporarily or permanently revoked if such a step is deemed necessary by us. We're a private venture enabled by an all-volunteer staff. Please treat this venue as a polite discussion in a friend's home and respect the wishes of the hosts.

We have learned from bitter experience that discussions of politics, abortion, religion, and sexual orientation often degenerate into less-than-polite arguments or claims that "my God is better than your God". For this reason, we do not discuss such subjects on THR, and any threads dealing primarily with these subjects will be closed or deleted immediately. Threads which deal with other subjects, but which mention abortion, religion or sexual orientation as a side issue, may be allowed to continue, but will be closely scrutinized, and closed or deleted if they "cross the line".

I'm perfectly happy with the new format: same as the Marlinowner's and FirearmsTalk sites. As Sparkie has pointed out, Spring and Summer are slow times for most gun forums: people are out shooting, or mowing or painting or gardening or doing things other than being on-line. I used to check this site several times a day, but have slowed down to typically once or twice a day, mostly because I've got other things to do. The same applies to the other gun forums.

A search for "Mini-14" is what brought me here, and it is primarily the Mini-14 that keeps me here. There are some notable very knowledgeable folks here that have taught me a LOT, and continue to. I enjoy the Political forum, too, but not for the bantering/personal attacks (I was warned once about what seemed to be a personal attack which wasn't worth disputing because on reflection, I realized it could be recognized as such).

I think another aspect is that PU forum members are a bit more astute knowing that everything they post is forever and monitored.

Logos: trying to figure out how you found how many members are currently logged on, how many posts, etc. Used to be easy to see at the bottom of the page, but not anymore. Not that it matters...

Eggo: If your so happy with the high road go there I personally will not
miss you.
Your the only one wanting to force your views on the rest of us.
Also the only one complaining. If you do not want to have your
panties in a bunch stay the heck out of the political forum.
I do not understand why people like you always want to make
people conform to your way of thinking.
Sounds like a rat transformation to me.
Lets make free speech less free sounds like you do not think
much of personal freedoms. Civility is worth more than freedom
in my book that does not cut it. You just think everyone is
is of lesser worth then you, you have made that point clear
in your past posts. Like how much intelligence is lost when
your not here. To that I as a deplorable say F'k off.
Stop trying to fix things that are not broken.
One other point many people on gun forums are scared
to post or login because of the bribem's statements about
gun ownership. The less visible they are they believe will
have a better outcome in a shtf scenario,

(Misc. rants)
Civility is worth more than freedom

(More misc. ranting)
Sparkie, civility and freedom can coexist together in perfect harmony.

Most people know this and do not have to be repeatedly chastised for constantly spouting childish insults.

When I first came here it was my Mini-14 ownership which caused me to find this site.
I also liked the name "Perfect Union". We all know it's from the preamble to the Constitution : "We the people of the United States in order to form a more Perfect Union......"

I pretty much like all the members and the shared knowledge. I also liked the "old look" , it was comforting to
drop in nearly every day and scan the forum, some good stuff.

I did have a problem with the Liberal plants that seem to infect any forum where American values and gun ownership
are topics.
The moderators did a good job of keeping those topics in the general chit chat and news and political forums.

As to changing things, I guess it's inevitable. This Forum was here before I came and will be here after I'm gone.

I just don't have to like it the way I don't have to like the new "progressive government" doing away with what made the
U.S. form a "more Perfect Union" in the first place.

Eggo; Not a rant a statement of fact I will not miss you.
Civility by your rules allows only what you deem appropriate.
Others freedoms are secondary to your wants and desires.
Go find yourself a safe space where all us inferiors are not allowed.
You should work for bribem you would fit right in their game plan.
Maybe you should get some professional help for your control
issues.
By the way if I hurt your feelings to bad.
I guess cancel culture is part of your plan.
I am here to voice my opinion not yours.
I think your a waste of time and effort.

No......just no.

Namecalling and personal attacks just reveal that......

1. The namecaller is stupid, and.......

2. The namecaller lacks useful and intelligent arguments.

Trouble is, the namecallers don't just hurt themselves, they hurt the entire forum.

They are the reason that Perfect Union is one of the least successful forums on the Internet.......and is currently dying.

After being locked down for over a year you want people
locked down indefinitely so they will be here to satisfy
what you think should be the desired usage numbers.
The only reason people would get the idea that this
site is dying as you put it is because of your stupid
posts telling them that.
So your plan is to drive our newest member somewhere
else because of your rhetoric, sounds like a rat plot to me.
So which site is paying you to sabotage this site.
Maybe admin should look into that.
The two faces of evil.
Remember to smile as you stab people in the back.
eggo the socialist justice warrior doing his best to
help things here be progressively PC.

So you're in favor of free speech but you want to stop free speech from revealing the fact ugly namecalling and hate-speech is killing the forum?

Is this a successful forum? Here's the number right now. You and me and two others.
