I have two minis. One I bought back in the mid 1980s that has a Choate folding stock. The other I recently bought from a buddy. This one has a Ruger factory folding stock. Do these folding stocks make my minis illegal? Thanks in advance to anyone who can set me straight on this.

Any gun is legal, as long as you don't get caught. I wish it wasn't like this, I mean these bans have done nothing, the guns are less available to citizens, and more available to career criminals. Welcome to the hell known as the Clinton administration.

My kneejerk is that a Ruger Factory Folder, unless stamped LEO only, would not have come out of the factory after the ban. A Mini with an aftermarket folder could have been modified at any time, but a Factory folder....????

Ruger has put up a rough guideline for what serial number ranges were made when... Where does your rifle fit in these charts?

Thanks for the input. I checked the serial numbers on my guns and both are pre ban. The one with the factory folder was made in 1989 and never used, hence my belief that it was new.

This is ABSOLUTLY FALSE!!! Ruger made plenty of factory folders for the civilian market prior to 1990!! They even made factory folder RANCH models!! (I had one that is now in the collection of a good friend of mine) It was verified by Ruger as coming from the factory in that config! Ruger pretty much stopped letting the factory folding stocks out to the public around '89-'90 as a PURELY self-regulatory thing, not because they were illeagle!

I would use the serial# to determine the rifle mfg date,if it was before the ban,I would'nt worry,it's up to the accuser to prove that it was'nt!! Which would be next to impossible!!

uh.... re-read my post...

I NEVER said that Ruger did not ship factory folders. I said that I doubt Ruger would have let a post-ban factory folder out the door after the ban took effect without the LEO Only stampings on the rifle.

Yep,your right,I get what you were saying! Sorry!

I've seen ALOT of factory folders (I currently have 5 guns and 1 extra stock for a total of 6),but I've never run across one stamped "LEO ONLY". Of course,I've never run across a bayonet with RUGER markings either!(There's been rumors that such a thing exists!)

I'd be interested to know IF there were factory folding stocks marked "LEO ONLY".
