I purchased 400 rnds of range brass at a show. All brass has been cleaned. I noticed some of the brass has black stains on the cases. Wondering what may have caused this and are they safe to use.

dirty fingerprints??? from the oils of the skin left on to tarnish??

As long as the structural integrity of the brass is fine, I would say they are FINE!!! If the stains come off with a little cleaning... no worries!!

Yes, it will clean up with some steel wool. My concern was a chemical that night of caused the stain and effect the metal brass to cause a failure.

I don't know. I've never seen stains quite like those. Kind of strange looking to me. Maybe someone with some more experience will weigh in.

Brass natuarally oxidizes to that rich brown color... it is the presence of caustic substances that will cause the copper in the brass alloy to turn it green... ( primers/powder)

I think a little tumbling will shine em right up and they will be just fine!
