Clark will work on Mini-14's but claims Mini-30's are a waste of time for any "real" accuracy work... Seems they tried one a few years ago and got NO WHERE...
Anybody out there have any 6 ppc experiance built up from a Mini-30 ??? AB

Hi AB, I split off your post to make a new thread so you will get better response to your question. Check this out:

Several price packages, from 1 moa or better accuracy guarantied to no guaranty on accuracy.

Calibers available for Mini 30® action are 7.62 x 39, 22 PPC, 6 mm PPC, .308 x 39, 300 Whisper
http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/mini_14_...ccessories.html

I don't know if you can buy factory ammo for the 6mm ppc. If not you will have to reload.

It's been my personal experience that guns rechambered to another caliber will loose accuracy. I know of three guns that were good shooters until rechambered the most recient being a 300 savage over to 300 winchester mag. The gun is now more accurate if used as a club.

6mm ppc is only available now with hand loads... Years ago Sako made some hunting rifles in 6mm ppc that shot 1/4 to 1/2 from the factory, with factory ammo availble, but those days are gone... No more ammo or factory 6ppc rifles... I reload anyway so why not go for the BEST... (The parent cartridge for the 6mm ppc is the 7.62x39mm for anyone out there reading this who may want to know what we are talking about...) Today they make 220 Lapua brass which is easily "sized up" to 6mm (.243) and it shoots over 3000 fps with a 70 grain bullet and close to 3300 fps with 60 grain slugs (right up there with you .223 guys) The 6ppc is the standard "bench rest" round and those guys put 5 shots through ..300 and .400 holes all day long !!!
Will keep you posted on progress... The ball is rolling to Carl @ Accuracy Systems Inc in Co... The replys about ARS were pretty scary I REALLY appreciate your help and ALL the responses to the query... recently" ARS in Tx. vs Accuracy Systems in Co." thanks again, super site you have here... the best on the web- AB

The metric system is a tool of the devil! For all practical purposes the .308X39 is the 7.62X39...ballistically speaking. From the reloading or barrelmaking standpoint the two are seperated by only .003". The 7.62mm designation when applied to the 39mm case-length cartridge of Soviet design is .311". 7.62 as applied to, say, our 7.62X51 NATO is .308". Nice, huh? Our beloved standard domestic measure .308" is sometimes applied to the 39mm case in a rifle fitted with a .308" groove diameter bbl to alleviate the headache of procuring and segregating the only slightly larger projectiles. It's logistics, not performance.

Had along reply but got lost in computer... The .308 (original barrel of the Mini-30) had great range of reloadable bullets- all the way from 85 gr to 220 gr with velocties of 2500fps to 1400fps respectively... The 300 whisper deliberatly shoots subsonic with a smaller percentage of velocty loss at say 200-300 yards than a "standard " 125 gr 7.62x39mm cartridge. The venerable 45 colt in 1911 military form is still the weapon of choice of some special forces, for it's legendary stopping power with 255 gr slugs... The wind will have less affect on long and slow because there is less of a pressure wave formed in front of a huge slow bullet. The trajectory curve looks like a softball in slow pitch, but it is predictable an accurate... Sort of the other end of the pendulum from you flat and fast .223 guys...AB

You got it ...All those .308 bullets loaded into a 7.62 x 39mm case ... to play with at the range (or computer loading programs anymore...) It's real name is better descibed as a .308x39mm Same cartridge as the Russian M43 AK/SKS round except with a .308 diameter bullet instead of the .311 dia Roosky version...

PS I would sell my blued Mini-30 .308 Barrel if your game ... I could finish fire lapping it for you if you want... AB

MMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm

very interesting but I do not even have a 30!

two 14s though,,,would like to have a 30 if it could generate enough energy for deer hunting,,,,,,with the 308x39 what kind of velocity can ya get with say a 150 grain PSP, or do you know a site where I can collect some data? I'll do a search,,,,,,,,could be interested!;)

PPosey I ran this load from my hornady manual then ran the ballistics on my Infinity ballistic program. Hornaday .308/7.62mm x39mm 150gr sp, loaded with 23.6gr of RX-7 @ 2100fps. Sighted in at 100 yds.
100 yds- 1202.6 ft/lb @ 1900.4 fps
150 yds- 1085.4 ft/lb @ 1805.3 fps/ bullet drop -2.75"
200 yds- 978.2 ft/lb @ 1713.9 fps / bullet drop -8.16"

.Note: This is an experimental load at max pressure, and should not be attempted except by experienced reloaders, starting at a reduced powder wt., and proper bullet seating depth!

Ya gots ta have at least 900 ft/lb with good shot placement to drop a deer reliably. A typical 10" -12" groups at 200 yds, is not good shot placement. Therefore a good tuneup would be inorder.

The .308 showed a velocity of 1879 fps with 1176 ft. lbs @ 100 yards to 1720 fps with 985 ft. lbs @150 yards... using Hogdon 4198 w/ 150 gr Rd nose bullet... That was taken at MAX SAAMI LOAD in my NECO QUICK LOAD program... So it is similar to the previous answer...

I have done some interesting work with larger bullets... They become very stable and more accurate but with significant bullet drop...

The problem can also be traced to barrel twist 1 in 10" is more idealy suited for heavier bullets... Shilen's site (barrel maker) has a chart on his site that gives a bullet weight for that rate of twist UP TO 220 GRAINS !!!

The heavy bullets have proven very accurate in my SKS... I have been able to get a Norinco SKS to shoot 1-3/8 " 3 shot groups @ 100 yards... with a 174 gr boatail. The SKS shoots the same cartridge w/ a .003 larger bullet in a similar barrel 1 in 8 twist. The next step up for the SKS is 212 gr bullet and I expect groups to be better still and more consistent...

After learning of the 300 Whisper that goes subsonic and keeps 70-80 % of its energy out at 150 to 200 yards I don't worry about speed anymore... Just energy available and accuracy at the target... AB

If we are going to use the 7.62X39 or the .308X39 for deer hunting the biggest question is will the bullet work at these low velocities? Every bullet maker out there has a minimum & maximum velocity for every one of their bullets. Many 30 calibre bullets have minimums well above 2000 fps. My advise would be to find a bullet in the velocity range you plan to shoot then work up your best load. If you're punching paper feel free to shoot whatever you like downrange, that target won't run off & suffer a slow death.

Mmmmmmmmm,,,,,

That is kinda low for deer except at very short ranges. I hunt with a 30-30 mostly now and the 308x39 would be a step down in both power and accuracy.

I have taken two deer with my mini14 though,,,,,, winchester power point plus ammo and shots taken at 50 yards from a stand. No problem with them but both were heart shots.

Hey Abendicum,,,,

Is there a serial # that signals the time when the mini 30 stopped coming with a true 308 cal barrel???? Or am I mixed up on this?

I am probably going to trade one of my mini14's for a mini 30 and may switch both if I like the first one.

If I cannot find one with the 308 barrel then I would be real intersested in that barrel.
