I have been doing a lot of Cowboy Action Shooting lately, and am looking at a Colt Cowboy. I've been using a Ruger Vaquero and an Umberti clone. Any one got an opinion on this gun?:2guns:

I have Ruger Vaquero in .45 colt and I think it's a fine pistol. With that said if you like the Vaquero you should like the Colt. I believe it was Guns & Ammo that mentioned Ruger makes the frame for the Colt Cowboy. I'm not saying they are the same frame, the Ruger looks slightly bigger, but the size difference shouldn't matter to the average shooter. Cabela's also has a .45 Colt clone but I can't remember the price. I think it was about $200.

I've been seriously considering getting into CAS. I'd like to get a S&W Schofield if I do, though. I think the hinge action is really cool, but the $1100 price tag is a bit much for me right now.

What sort of guns are most people using in your area?

Ruger isn't exactly traditional in operation, but very strong and very popular. The Colt Cowboy actually copies the Ruger quite a bit. The Colt clones are mostly decent but have all the flaws of the original.

Sorry I took so long getting back here, thanks for th replies. Docwagon, most folks around here are using Rugers with a heavy sprinkling of Colt 1873 single actions for those with the money. I decided to pass on the Colt Cowboy after hearing a lot of negative stuff elsewhere. I bought a new stainless Vaquero and used it at a match this weekend. It shot great! I must warn you, though. Once you get into Cowboy Action Shooting, it's addictive! :2guns:

I'm going to go watch one soon, just to see. I though the Schofield would be nice because of the hinge action for quick reloading. I don't know how much of a factor that is in CAS, though. CAS and reloading are the top 2 things on my firearms-related to do list. :)
