My only complaint about the 1991A1 are the stock front site coming loose. My brother-in-law has one from when they first came out, the all parkerized ones, very spartan. Out shooting one day in the mid 90's and plop, off falls his front site. I laughed and mocked him about it that day. Now fast forward to 2007. I have a new 1991A1 Commander, nicely blued, nice grips, a good looking 1911. Out shooting a weekend (about 350 rounds or so) and I notice that the front site is wiggly, my punishment for mocking my bro in law so long ago. Haven't seen one staked very well in any of the ones in our area. But overall, they are an entry level gun and a site job would be my first suggestion.

Okay, back in the early 90s, everyone was complaining about how much new Colts were. So Colt produced the 1991A1s to compete with the low end 1911 manufacturers. At the time, they were all parkerized, not available in SS, and had basic 3-dot sights. I had a compact version that worked very well with regular ball ammo and Remington Golden Sabres in the 185 gr loading. I wish I had kept it. I paid $450 for it.

I have a 1991 Stainless that was made in '96. It is a very well fitted pistol, and is accurate and reliable. I didn't like the plastic (straight) mainspring housing, so I replaced it with an Ed Brown arched that looks like it was made for the pistol. I also switched out the long plastic trigger for a shorter Colt one. I replaced all the springs in it with ones from Wilson. It is a fantastic gun.

Wow Gunrun, great joke, "buy a Kimber because they have better QC than Colt!" I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! Talk to any decent 1911 smith and get them to tell you the truth, Kimer will be the last gun they recommend and most despise them, if not openly, then behind doors. "But MY smith loooooves them!" Go have a heart to heart talk with them, they are only saying what you want to hear and know they WILL have work fixing all that is wrong with them, NOT because they like them. Ask the smith what they recommend for a carrry gun and Kimber will come in just behind a rock or stick.

Look at a SAM or RIA 1911, both are good guns and great values, but I like the SAM better. If you can find a Norinco at a decent price they are excellent too!
