Cabela's carries 20 and 30 round magazines for the mini-14 and mini-30s. The mini-30 30 rounders are around $29 and blue. The mini-14 30 rounders are about the same or $33 for the nickel plated mags. I called and asked them who made them. They said Triple K. I talked to their service rep. He said they are good and are guaranteed to work or I can send them back. Anyone have any experience with these mags?

Thanks, I ordered three for me and several for my dad down in Texas. I'll tell you what, this mini-14 magazine hunt has turned into a real pain. It seems like there are a lot out there:

USA

Victor

PMI

ASI

and others, but who knows which are worth buying? I've had good and bad luck at gun shows. For My VEPR II, no problem, I just buy an AK-47 mag and it works!

Are there any mini-14 mini-30 magazines that are any good?

In standard capacity (20 & 30)? Ruger factory. The rest of the aftermarkets all seem to have complaints made against them at one time or another. This is one instance where AKs and AR's (USGI surplussed) and their abundantly available reliable magazines put the mini's to shame. After all, Bill Ruger was the start of the reductions you see now to 10 and now 5 round magazines--the lowly public had no need for 20 and 30 round magazines, according to him. Just LEO's and military have the right to them, he figured.

Thanks, I was just about to ask who was the person responsible for this nonsense. Did Ruger make factory mags for either the mini-14 or mini-30 in 20 or 30 round capacities? If so, are they available anywhere for less the a treasure only Indiana Jones could find?

Mini-14 had both available, and I have one of each. I did not realize that the 20 rounder was a rarity, and it is my favorite mag to use out of all of them. Alas, they command a fortune now, I got lucky at a show in Melbourne,FL where one seller only had a few things to sell who sold me a 30 round factory mag for $40-it had a bit of rust on the side of the body. Everything matched up and it was authentic-he originally wanted $45-I showed him I had only two $20s left after buying a Bushmaster, and he said sold!:D The fella did not know what he was selling, and he obviously wasn't a regular seller. Flawless performer and only very recently changed the spring, it was having problems with 27-28 rounds loaded, new spring=flawless again.

Hey thanks for the information. I know to keep an eye out for them now. What would you say is the most I should pay for factory Ruger mags in 20 or 30? And you did say they could be rebuilt?

It's hard to say in regards to the current pricing. I saw a couple of NIB factory 30 rd mags going for $150 a piece at the fun show in Orlando recently. They are outrageously priced and only going up. I myself won't pay such a premium, and won't pay more than $50 per mag myself. I lucked out on that one from Melbourne. I really don't know what limit you should set for the mags-I know they certainly aren't getting any cheaper.
And yes they can be rebuilt-easily. Springs and floorplates are available, and I suggest you inspect the follower you intend to replace with as I stay with the "anti-tilt" style (characterized by longer stems to combat tilting). I was waiting to hear if someone has used USGI AR/M16 springs in the minis as they are cheap and plentiful--I guess I'll try it myself this weekend.

I just saw a 20 factory Ruger with a starting bid of 175.00 on gunbroker.com:eek:
This is getting out of hand. Keep your eyes open and you will luck into a 20 for 50-80 bucks! At the gun shows, go slow and look at alll the tables that have a great assortment of accessories... you may get lucky... hope you do and good hunting. (Seems I spend my time hunting for good deals more that hunting game.)

Not to defend Bill Ruger, but the real blame for the hi-cap magazine ban lies in Washington. Without the tacit approval of our senators and representatives, who have the power to obliterate the ban, it would not be in effect. Old Bill sure did his part to stab his customers in the back, but he had a lot of help from others!

The AW ban is due to sunset on 13 Sep 04, unless reinstated..:D

Mr. Ruger can be blamed for the very start of the compromising and backstabbing in regards to standard capacity magazines, which were factory supplied back then when you picked up a new rifle. It was Bill who lies with the blame in regards to reductions in mag capacity-something that many people have not forgotten. Lastly you could blame the rest of us for voting in the politicians that supported the ban....an anti-gun candidate will never get my vote or support, and fewer and fewer people are voting anymore, aka apathy.

This magazine thing has turned into a bit of a headache. It seems that there is something wrong with just about all of them. I can't believe the prices for the Ruger mags.

Anyway, here is my latest question. I do have a Triple K mag for my mini-30. I have only tried seating it. It seats find, BUT, I can push on the base and make it go up and down a little. Do you think its going to work? My USA Mags fit so tight I almost have to use a come along to get them back out. Why don't I shoot it and see? I work full time and go to college at night. I have no time until the end of April. Then I'll take out the Cabela's mag and see. I was just wondering if anyone had any insight on the mag being able to go up and down a little...?

notpars,
Cabelas is a great place for equipment... except magazines. Those mags are probably made by Western Products or possibly Victor. Both brands in my experience are pure junk. If they work then you are one lucky person. Regarding the sloppy fit on the Triple K, My experience is that some slop seems to be OK. USA's seem to fit the best of the aftermarket mags, I have 2 new PMI 30's and they have some front to back play but very limited up/down movement. I had to adjust the lips for proper feeding but that just took a few seconds. Contrary to opinions posted on this and other boards, I bought 5 20's and 5 30's new USA mags about 1 year ago, all stainless, and they all work and fit perfect!:D
I may have used all my luck but I'm hard pressed to speak bad of USA since I have the only ones that work! I won't hold my tongue on Western or Victor... as stated, pure junk! Cabelas is good on returns, since you can't shoot for testing, CAREFULLY cycle by hand and you should be able to get an idea if they will work at all. If you have dummy rounds (no powder/primer) it is alot safer. If you use live ammo... PLEASE make sure you are located where nothing will get hit if one should ignite (aim down into the grass). Good Luck, keep us posted, would love to hear that they work without a bigger headache!

Cajungeo,
It's a GB Series 181 serial 4xxx, blue steel with a Clark laminated stock and a Ultimak rail. I'll get the camera out one of these days and show it off!

I also have a 185 series GB stainless folder (factory) and a 184 full stock. All three shoot about 1.5 MOA without any mods. In the safe I have 2 NIB GB factory folders blue. Don't know how these shoot. Investment grade and probably won't ever shoot them unless I get crazy.

Been collecting them (GB models) for a few years, can't help myself:confused: When a good deal comes along... you know the story. Besides, they appreciate at a better rate than my stock (Wall Street, not wood):D
