OK guys, here is what I need. I have a pre-ban mini 14 already. With lots of mags and ammo. I got rid of an older AK that I could not hit the side of a barn with even if I was in it. The question is, do I get another mini 14 or a mini 30......I have 500 rounds of 7.62 from my AK, but nothing else. Thanx for the imput. C.M. out.....

Get A VEPR-K !!! It is without a doubt THE best AK I've ever owned!! It is made in Russia at the polyany military plant, using the RPK (heavy AK machinegun) receiver, and a heavy bbl. The fit and finish is beyond compare! And it's HEAVY and solid! The stock is different than the standard AK,but I like it,plus,it uses ALL AK mags!! They are a little more expensive than the run-of-the-mill AK,but you won't be dissapointed! And it's still cheaper than the mini-30! And much more reliable!!

The main gripe I had with the mini-30 was the lack of WORKABLE High-caps!!! Who only wants to carry 5rds in a mag?? :ar15:

I have done my time with AK's......I and my son do not like them as much as other semi's...They are great firearms, but just not for me. I have a nice AR. A new M4.....Not ever having a mini 30 I was thinking of seeing if I like them. And I do like my pre-ban mini 14. Its tricked out. Bayo. lug, folder, flash fider and so on. This new one would be standard.

The VEPR-k is a very big departure from any AK you've probably seen or held. But if you're dead set against an AK, I'd buy a decent SKS before I'd by a mini-30 !!

One thing that I should have put down is that I am a south paw. I shoot Lt handed. I like the controls of the mini over the AK's and SKS's. I am doing some traiding so I do not have the $. just some traidin.

CM,
Given what you've said, I'd vote for a Mini-14. Be prepared to spend a little time and a few $$'s to get it to shoot accurately. You can find so much good info on this site to help you do that for not too many $$'s.

Now your choice is Ranch or Regular, Stainless or Blue, Wood or Synthetic stock.

I love my Mini, but its been in the safe for much of its life with me because it was too inaccurate. Now, with help from this forum, I'm fixing all that. Installed a BW mb, getting a trigger job, going to install a new gas block, and I'm going to bed the stock. If that doesn't help it, I don't know what I'll do. But from the testimonies I've seen here, it does wonders for the accuracy.

Let us know what you decide.

Thanx for the imput guys. I just got a nice standard SS with wood stock mini 14. With mags and ammo I have I'm already up to speed. I hope it shoots a little tighter than my pre-ban. I think I'll put my muzz break with the M1A type front site on it. So I'm out of the AK business and back to only AR's and mini's.

Looks like you already made your deal before I could read this post. The good thing about owning 2 mini's as you can have them for different uses. Say one tricked out for Tactical, and the other for hunting.

The mini-30 you could get some reliable 10rd mags, but behond that it is hit and miss. It would make a fair deer rifle for up to 125 yds or so.

You know, there is one other option. You could by an AR15 that is made for lefty's!! They actually make an AR15 that has the opening on the left side of the gun specifically for left handed shooters!

Just a thought! I still love my mini's,but I don't have a problem with a little diversity!!
