I cant believe this I bought the Mini-14 222 I was asking you about.Took it out to shoot it,I have two five round nags that came with it.But when you fire the gun It fails to cycle.You have to manually pull the slide back to eject the spent cartridge and chamber another round. The gun looks brand new the rifleing looks as if it has never had a round put through it.And its not been shot enough to show any scrapes on the blueing on the slide.It shoots better than I can.I bought the gun used I guess as is.I dont think the owner was aware of the problem.But it has sure caused me a great deal of distress. I called Ruger and they said to make sure the clamp at the end of the hand guard was slid all the way back,and make sure that the four hex bolts were on tight.I havent had time yet to check it out.Does anyone have any suggestions in case Ruger was wrong.They concluded the discussion saying that it seemed that all the gas was escaping some where and not cycling the bolt. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rugster: Aloha! I'm no gunsmith but Ruger seems to be right. First check to make sure that the clamp at the end of the had guard was slid all the way back - this could impead the operation.

I'm surprized that Ruger suggested that you tighten the four hex bolts on the gas block. Because, these are done at the factory, set at a torgue specifications. Ruger has those specifications.

Just hope you don't have a crack gas block, if you do you'd have to purchase one through Ruger.

Sounds like there's nothing you can do. Send it to me and I''l get what I can for it as scrap!

Field strip it & see what's going on at the gas block / piston area. Maybe there's no gas bushing installed?

Rugster, I would not be afraid to disamble the gas block. I have had mine apart several times adjusting the gas bushings, and it always works fine. I would dissamble the gas block, and inspect the orfice in the barrel, the orfice in the gas bushing, and the orfice in the gas bushing. If these are not pluged then you should be getting gas ok. Reassemble, and torque the allen bolts evenly from 17 to 25 in-lbs (snug not real tight), with even gap between the gas block halves, using a feeler guage. Also use loctite (blue) on the threads so then won't work out. Its a piece of cake. It is a simple system, if the opp rod is getting the gas, it will go rearward.

That is a wierd-ass problem. I'd say the wierd-ass that sold you the rifle put it together wrong. He/she probably didn't get the gas bushing seated in it's hole.

About buying used guns: I don't think you have a chance cancelling a check. If you cancel a check, one dealer told me that would be like "stealing" a firearm. You might get the credit card company involved if bought on a credit card, at a dealer with a real store.

But what do I know? I'd ask for the seller to make it right, but I'd be careful about refusing to pay.

Even so, anything can be fixed. I'm sure it'll be ok after a few posts and trial and error.

I fooled with it after I got off Duty this morning. the clamp at the end of the hand guard it was loose. And the clamp was forward about 1/4 inch.I scooted it ack to its original wresting place,or by going by my 223s the place it should be.I had to loosen the four hex nuts ,which were already loose.And put it back in place I put lok tite on the four hex nuts and tightened them back up.I have a feeling that was the problem,and feel like the original owner knew this and was why he sold the gun.But when you buy something new thats a chance you take.But it wont be forgotten.The gun looks brand new and the paint hasnt been worn off the slide.I sure hope this fixed it.if so I wonder why it jarred loose. AS soon as It quits raining I am going to give it another go around. Thanks to all for your valuable information.Wish me luck!!

Thanks for your help fellows I have a operational mini-14 222 you guys fixed it.It Cycles fine now I dont know exactly what you did but its fixed,and I feel much better.You guys ever thought about being a Gun Smith.

Rugster---You should't be able to slide the gas block back & forth but just alittle bit. The gas bushing connects the barrel to the gas pipe & in effect holds the gas pipe in place (Keeping it from being a projectile aimed right back at you). I would disassemble the gas block & verify the fit of the gas bushing. It should protude above the gas block just alittle to fit into the recess machined into the bottom of the barrel. If you can move the gas block fore & aft without resistance you have a problem that needs to be fixed.
