Just trying to get stories from anyone of you have have managed to inadvertently damage, or even knock off zero, any series of Mini-14 sight. ESP interested in stories on the 180 series with the rear garand style sights.

Tell us what type of mini, style of sight, how you damaged it, and what the effect was.

I have heard that even the newer 580 series are susceptible to a wrong bump.

Are the 180 series rear sights sturdy enough to last through most rugged use, since they are the sights on their "military" model? Or would swapping out to tech sights be a very worthy upgrade? Are the tech sights even THAT much more durable compared to the alluminum originals??

The older Garand-style is a great look. I like it a lot better than the "perched on top" look of the new 580 series rear sight. I suppose there are plenty of other improvements to offset that though. I didn't break the rear Tech Sight on my 580 series, but I did break the thing loose despite blue LocTite and what must have been very close to the right torque on the mounting screw.

I think I could pound nails with the front sight and not knock it loose.

Sounds like a rifle in need of a recoil buffer...

Might have been the recoil; that incident was before I put on a pair of blue Wilson 1911 buffers. No problem since, but it could be I just used more LocTite the second time. I don't recall beating it on anything, but it did come loose late on day 2 of an Appleseed shoot in October.
