No responses over on another board either. I know I can get my answers at ar15.com but it's blocked here at work and haven't had time at home to sit on the pc.

Seems the price for RAS is $300+ which would be might expensive for a set of plastic handguards, if indeed they are plastic.

I had a RAS on my Bushmaster HBAR, which I've very recently replaced with an ARMS SIR #51.

Here's is my AR when it had the RAS:

The standard, M4/M5 RAS is NOT free-floating. KAC does sell a free-floating RAS, though.

The RAS is the first rail system to be fielded in the U.S. military, and is combat proven.

I think the only drawback to the RAS is that it DOESN'T free-float the barrel.

Here's an excellent informational website put together by an AR15.com board member about the products of Knight Armament Corp.:

First thing to know about the SIR is that it's two piece. A metal upper portion ....

.... and a polymer, lower handguard:

The weight though is surprisingly light. This is because most get the misconception from appearance that it's heavy, when in fact it's not, because of the polymer construction of the lower handguard.

The first ARMS SIR that came out was the #45. It is wider than a RAS. I could put my light on the right side of the RAS, and activate the tailcap button with my thumb while holding the front grip. I couldn't do this with the #45.

Now ARMS has come out with new SIR's, all of which are "Slimline". This pic shows the older (and wider) #45 on top, and the new "Slimline" (a #51):

The SIR is definitely an improvement from the RAS. Freefloating is the new rage, with KAC too and their RAS 2.

Both the SIR and RAS 2 are expensive, but worth every penny if you want a top-quality, free-floating, user-installed rail system.

Since SIR prices seem to be pretty fixed from what I can tell, it's mainly good service to the customer that you're looking for, and for that you just can't beat Mid-South Tactical Network, or MSTN:

There are several SIR models out now, so to get an idea of what they are, the website of Cal's Sporting Armory is pretty good:
