Jury Orders Gun Distributor To Pay $1.2M To
WidowLandmark Civil Case Stems From 13-Year-Old's Murder Of Fla.Teacher

UPDATED: 9:26 p.m. EST November 14, 2002

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A jury has awarded a Florida woman$1.2 million from a gun distributor that sold the gun used to kill her husband two years ago. Pam Grunow's lawsuit accused Valor Corp. of distributing a gun that was "unsafe, defective and lacked features that would have prevented a minor from using it."

Thirteen-year-old Nathaniel Brazill used the gun
to kill his teacher, Barry Grunow, Pam's husband, in a West Palm Beach classroom in
2000. Brazill was convicted of second-degree
murder and sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Pam Grunow's lawyer asked for $76 million. But
the jury found gun distributor Valor Corp. 5
percent liable for Grunow's death. The owner of
the gun and the school board held most of the
liability, the jury found.

The jury didn't find any liability for Brazill, who pulled the trigger. Brazill stole the unloaded gun and bullets from a cookie tin stashed away in a dresser drawer of family friend Elmore McCray.

The jury said Grunow's family should get $24 million from the three parties. The school board was told to pay her $10.8 million, and the
family friend was told to pay $12 million.

This is the first lawsuit in the country in which a gun company has been held responsible in a murder.

That is rediculous on so many levels.

First, the concept that the dealer is responsible in any way, and the person who pulled the trigger is not.

Second, that a multi million dollar award is granted in a civil trial for a murder victim. $76 million is a stupidly high amount of money. A school teacher is never going to earn that much in their life, and "pain and suffering" is only worth so much. People say human life is priceless, but they can sure set a price on it in a court room. Civil court awards look a lot like lottery wins, don't they?

So, where does this lead? Can I choke to death on a Big Mac, so my wife can sue McDonald's for not cutting it into bite sized pieces for me?

If I'm in a car wreck, I'm going to sue the auto dealer the driver bought the car from, the last gas station that sold him gas, the state for issuing the driver a license, his parents for giving birth to him, and his driver's ed. instructor for doing a lousy job. I was thinking I might sue the mining company that provided the raw metal for the car as well, but this seemed like it might be going a bit overboard.

Can we sue the Diane Feinstein for pain and suffering because I saw a picture of her. I was thinking of suing Leopold for allowing me to buy a weaver scope and I missed a deer. Its so confusing:confused:

Unfortunately, your exagerations of frivelous lawsuits seems to be the norm in todays entitlist minded judicial system when tweaked by liberals. The liberals won't be happy until we are all begging for money and food, and praising them for being the ones that gave it to us. They have no concept of making a living and provided for oneself. They have the heart of a socialist/communist country in their sights, and expect that we will all be complacent. Good thing we are not all liberals in this country. I believe that in time, people in general will see them rightly, and judge them accordingly.

I heard today that the guy who sued the fast food companies for "making him fat" had his case thrown out. At least there is the occasional glimmer of logic.

On stupid lawsuits, here's one that your going to love. I only got the tail end of it, but some lawyer in NY, is suing McDonald's for making school children fat and unhealthy by selling fast food to them. This will probably make it to court, unless some one with brains kicks it out.

VA, do you mean that the kids will sue because the parents are ugly,or because the children are ugly,or both. Maybe the lawsuit would be if the parents are ugly, why did they breed in the first place? But then if either of the parents is REALLY f**ugly, who or what woul want to breed with it.

Ivananimal,
Sue Kalifornia's US Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat? She's in the top 1% of richest people in the US! Now there's some deep pockets! Oh, but don't touch her because she cares for the little folks! She does so much for the poor. She gives so many poor Chinese folks a job at 30 cents a day wages! She is the modern day slave trader.

Law Suits are out of hand and it is the LAWYERS that foam at the mouth at the prospect of making 40 percent of the profits..

Ideally if someone files enough lawsuits eventually one or maybe all will be granted, some settled out of court for a large sum, or the others will be given an ungodly amount of money from the juries who just want to get home to supper.....

Take for example a sixty minute program last week somewhere in a southern state lawyers have been running 11 different ads for lawsuits to entice people to sue Drug manufacturers.

one real FAT PIG of a man that owns a FLOWER SHOP,was interviewed,by sixty minutes he smiled and said with pride...(ONE 50 CENT DIET PILL MADE HIM A MULTI MILLIONAIRE)..
and he only sued a SMALL company, he stated he has a law suit against one of the LARGEST DRUG COMPANIES, and will make many times the MILLIONS he already made....

his claim was the diet pill clogged his arteries?????????
bullcrap..anyone could see it was his eating problem....

Anti Gunners will drive gun makers and sellers out of business and make owning a gun so scary that a lot of people will not own one for fear of law suits.........

i thought that some court high-up in the system declared that gun manufactuers weren't liable for murder, because they dindt pull the trigger, just like a bar isnt liable for getting someone drunk and having them going out and killing someone while DUI.
lazy people now just see lawsuits as a way out of there ****hole, instead of hard work and dedication (and i quote my grandfather there) . and when you accuse them of that, they claim to be victims of the system.

Whatever happened to accountability? The punk pulling the trigger should get the appropriate penalty. Thats it, end of story. The gun mfg didn't pull the trigger. Blaming guns/manufactures/anyone other than the shooter for killing people is like blaming pencils for spelling errors!

We are now in a society where its not a matter of committing the crime, its a matter of not getting caught, or getting away with minor penalties! The liberals are turning our court system into a mockery! Just watch the movie 15 Minutes once. In the end how he's about to be tried, etc. How the media is right there, screwing things up as usual... At least he finally gets the right penalty.

Insanity/bad childhood/lost job/forgot to take his insulin/ate a damn Twinkey/Smoked some dope/black cat ran in front of him earlier in the day/... This crap just flys in the face of common sense. Justice is a puddle of goo nowdays.

Say we found Osama bin Laden tomorrow, and arrested him. There would be human rights activists bitching because we are treating him unfairly/not feeding him well enough/blah blah. Then there would be the 2 year long trial, the constant media updates every five minutes. The question of where do we try him? Afghanistan? A military tribunal? US Court system? Is he insane or just incredibly intelligent? Lets face it, he would not get the punishment he deserves (bullet in head). He would get sent to a nice cozy "Retention" camp, eat and party like a king for the rest of his life under government PROTECTION. Like he gives a damn if he can't live in the Middle East any more? I think not.

How about we just let the SOB loose in downtown Manhattan and let the people of New York decide what to do with him! Thats what we really should do!
