Happy New Year to All! You guys with vintage 10/22's, what brand of ammo's giving you best accuracy? I have a '78 Sporter Deluxe, 100% stock, Vortex 2x8x32 scope. I sighted in with mediocre brand name stuff, Federal 525 red brick stuff, and Winchester 333 brick stuff, accuracy was so-so at 50yds, 1.5"+ groups. That same ammo was yielding .50"-.75" groups out of an old, scoped Marlin 60. I didn't expect the 10/22 was picky about ammo. Fed everything 100%, even the few squibs the Winchester stuff had.
EUREKA, I found it! I should've guessed, CCl MiniMags, 36gr Copper HP's, the old sight in stand by. Groups at 50yds measured under 3/4" ALL day long, occasional flyer still yielded under 1" five+ shot group. With the right ammo, as accurate as the Marlin 60. Now we'll see how this '66 first year International 10/22 I have coming, does.

Non-Giant Nighttime Garden Monsters ... During Summer ...

No dinky giant garden monsters now. No garden. Since the engagement range is usually quite short and my, (our) collective aim may be suspect, the Green Mountain Bentz chambered 1x9 quick twist 8" barrel used on the suppressed Ruger 10-22 SBR works just fine with the Aquila SSS 60 grain round nose lead bullets individually hollow pointed and weighed to about 55 grains bullet weight. Time consuming.

Seems to work OK. If we can see them thru the effective, (still) Cheap Russian Yukon low light scope they cease to move after being hit. Maybe 25 yards TOP. Usually 10-15 yards. Accurate enough. Pop, thud. Sometimes a squeak or two. Repeat. The good German 110 round drums help greatly.

Green Mountain Barrels.

I bought a Rossi replica of the Winchester pump model 62A in 1980 & almost sold it because it wouldn't extract the empties consistently & they were hard to remove.

Turns out it was the wax coating on the Winchester ammo I was using that caused it. Never had that problem again when I switched over to a non wax coated brand. Still have the gun & it's a good shooter.

If you want excellent accuracy out of a 10-22 you have to find one of the old heavy barrel target models.

Maybe the newer version is ok.......I haven't tried one.

You're doing fine with what you've got.

Stick with Federal ammo.

I have a 10/22 clone made by Tactical Solutions that shoots .5" or better groups at 60 yards with CCI SV and about the same with several other brands of decent ammo, and not as well with the bulk pack stuff, like "Thunder-duds." I have a feeling the rifle could shoot better if it were someone other than me pulling the trigger. Got a bipod for the rifle, but haven't been out to shoot it yet...usually, I've been resting the rifle on my range bag.

Ol marlin 60 would eat everything if ya kept it clean, usual FTF ammo was thunderbolts I'd save them all an shoot em out of my ol H&R 949,it was a 9 shot revolver that would never ever misfire. My best ammo was the same as 40s low cost an cheap.:lol:Feel sorry for the guys who are picky, picky bout ammo nowadays LOL

Okay... this reminds me of seeing double after visiting the “Clubs or Casino Bars “
All we need now is an ... “El Kabong” persona . Then I’ll just stay on Smith & Wesson Forum.

Back on track, IMHO, any .22LR ammo that isn't near 100% reliable through 10/22 cycling is worthless: I consider every one of my firearms a primarily self-defense weapon (the 10/22 and .22LR is lowest on that list but it is all about what is at hand at the time). I plink and don't hunt, so minute of a coffee-creamer bottle or toilet-paper tube filled with bird-seed or corn is good enough for me. I have a bi-pod on my early-'80s 10/22 carbine, but that is primarily because I'm lazy and like to lay down for plinking.

CCI MiniMags are the lowest common-denominator for all my .22LR semi-autos in terms of reliability, so that is all I stock and shoot. At 50 yards (by an impatient shooter - me) my 10/22 will reliably take down (and spread bird-seed) those TP tubes. They are the closest thing to paper I shoot at other than sighting in a scope. They are fine and reliable. Accuracy is irrelevant if it doesn't go "bang"...

yeah I grokked that after I bought a 'tub' of the supposedly 'new and improved' Rem goldens. one of 10 usually a pop rather than a crack (low powered) and 1 of 50 a dud. I have handy a brass rod in case a squib lodges. I give pill bottles full to pals - nowadays with the shortage they're glad to get it.
and federal 'auto match' ain't match grade fer shore. Winny M22 is a bit better, not much. mini-mag is the standard for regular ammo in all my (3) .22 LR rifles.
I'm not an exceptional shot so I won't make any unsubstantiated claims.

Man, you are doing well with the golden bb's. I have one gun that does well with them, a Stephens 62(?), cheap semi with a black stock. It actually likes the golden boogers, and is amazing at 100 yards with the Winchester super x bullets. I wont buy the golden anymore, but probably have 5k left from the Obama ammo shortage.
Luv cci mini mags for general use, but thrift usually gets me to win 333 or 555s or the federal 525 boxes.

anyone shoot the Browning brand (think made by Winny but cost a bit more) has the case head stamped with the Browning 'Buck' head. 100 round slide top box. I've got couple boxes I bought before 'the panic' occurred. haven't tried any of them. claim 1400 fps, seems uniform shape, good appearance.

With .22 ammo I've found that the best stuff is always in the 100 round slide top plastic boxes that we used to get for eight or nine dollars. Prices have changed, of course. Maybe by next spring they'll normalize.

Browning has a relationship with Winchester and Winchester made ammo for them way back in the 70s.

I have heard many Internet complaints about Browning ammo......if you just Google "Browning ammo any good? Forums" you will see a lot of horror stories. But........that's probably a little skewed toward the negative.
