I have a friend who owns an NHM-90 (AK varient) in 5.56mm. He has been offered a Mini-14 Stainless Ranch Rifle of recent manufacture in trade. The NHM is in near new condition and so is the Mini-14 from what he tells me.
My first reaction was "Are you on CRACK!?!?", but there is more to it. He lives here in the PRK and can't have his NHM with him because he never heard of the registration crap and missed it. So it is unreg'ged, and out of State.
Is the bird in hand, the mini, worth more then the bigger bird in the bush, AK out of State, or not?

Sadly, this is a no-brainer.

1) There is absolutely NO WAY he can register the AK in PRK.

2) It isn't not illegal for him to have/own/keep the rifle elsewhere, he just can't bring it into PRK.

3) If he sneaks it in and keeps the AK in California and for any reason is found with it - car accident, house fire, noticed while being rescued following a big earthquake, etc, he is then guilty of a felony and thus loses all rights to ever own a firearm again. And a felony is a felony, so regardless of the legality of the AK in, say Nevada or Pennsylvania, he is a convicted felon and no longer has Second Amendment rights.... anywhere.

Don't take the chance. It isn't worth the risk and the Mini 14/30 is NOT all that bad. The M1A1 is still legal here.

I have to agree with Judge. I have two AKs, pre and post ban. I had my pre-ban Mini and just got a Ranch. My reasoning was very simple, I live in Maryland and we will soon have a bill put on the house floor to ban the sale of AWs in MD. The Mini14/30 series of rifles has never been labeled as AWs, thus are safe for the immediate future from restrictions. As with PRK, I envision if the bill passes my AKs will be grandfathered, I'll grease them, wrap them and pack them away. While the Minis are open for use with no questions. Gun charges will haunt you like a ghost, tell your friend to get a Mini and play it safe for the future. One already illegal AK is not worth a felony hanging in his record for rest of his life.
