I just ordered 10 10 rd john masen mags. i ripped them out of there rapper, and attempted to insert, just to see if they fit. to my dismay, they didn't. they were to wide, i think, and on the back of the mag were the little hump on the back is to wide and flat, compared to my factory mag. they don't insert all the way unless i slap them in, then it takes considerable force to work the mag catch and yank them out. they don't just drop free. are all masen mags like this? should i return them to midway and try to get a refund? or is there any way to fix this problem?

natedog---Check them all to see that they indeed don't fit then send them back. Midway is good at standing behind their products I'm sure you'll have no trouble getting new mags or a credit. One thing about firearms is you should never need to force something to get it to work. If you do then there is something wrong & as you say the factory 5 rounder works fine. Return them. I tried one of the ProMags from Fourfour Mags & it worked very well in my Mini. They might be more expensive than the Masen mags but one mag that works is worth ten that don't. Actually that's not right mags that don't work aren't worth anything.

Good luck

ProMag seems to be the best 10 round mag made. Comparable to factory in quality and function. I would send them back to Midway for a refund.

It could happen. I once bought a box of my favorite Winchester 223 varmints, went to the range, talking to the guys, and loading my mags. Started shooten, and 3 rd had a jam, I looked in and there was a fat little bullet in there! It was a 7.62x39. Now how did that get in there? They musta sent ya de wrong thang!

At the Houston gun show they had some 10 rd mags (no brand name) that had plastic plates on the bottom, similar to pro-mags but different, are these john masons mags? The blueing didn't seem to be quiet as polished as the pro-mags.

i thought they were mini thirty mags too, but the little plastic packages they were packed in (apparently from the factory) all said mini 14 on them. plus, they did not taper like the manual illustrates mini 30 mags.

Other then sending the wrong products is this a good company? I like midway but have never tried anything for a mini 14.
I am new to the mini 14 game as my new gun should be in by next week. Where are other good places to buy add ons.?
Thanks

I've had a few Mason mags and they don't feed or fit well (not to mention that they are about 1" longer than the Promag). Also, the plastic plate on the bottom appears to be removable like the Promags but short of using a hammer, I have not been able to get them off. Overall, Promag's are 100% better.

Welcome to the forum geraldazaz. I have a Blackworrior Double muzzle brake, which had a John mason tag inside. It fit, and functions perfect. I saw some mags at the Houston gunshow that had a plastic bottom, but was a little diff. from Pro-Mags. I guess they were John Mason 10 rdrs. Here are some of my favorite links from Mini stuff:

Tried one of the John Masen mags today while doing a function test on my mini 30 with the new Ramline stock. I was having problems which are addressed in a different thread but the mag seemed to function fine. It is actually a little thinner than the promags I have but it actually fit the into the new stock better. I did notice that the promags are blued while the JM mags are actually painted. They are not quite as well made but seem to work fine for me. They are a far step above the western or triple K mags.

I have several JM's and they every one fit and function flawlessly in my model 196 Ranch. In fact they are the only brand that seem to work at all. I have tried USA, Pro-Mag,TripleK and PMI. I did buy two new thirty round Ramlines last week and they fit well but have not yet had a chance to test them for function.

I bought 12 masen mags a while back for my mini 14. 9 of them worked great. The other 3 i had to exchange because the mag catch was welded in the wrong spot. The 3 replacements were fine. It has been my experience that John Masen hi caps are the best non factory mags i've used in my Mini. They are alot better built than the USA and triple k crap.

I have 8 Masens and all fit and function fine, only one had the lock block mounted abit low. I taped the mag body to protect it and needle filed the bottom of the block til it locked easily then touched it up with matte black model paint.

With respect to the other mag makers, I have NEVER had one problem
with the 6 10rd ProMag's I have. Aside from a Ruger factory 10 rd'er
I believe ProMag to be the best as far as 10 rd aftermarket. bg

I bought some pro mags from fourfourmag.com...I had the same trouble, it wouldn't lock up in the mag well. I called , and was asking how to return them, when they asked if it was an older mini, (which it is, about 20 yrs old) They said mags for older mini's have to be modified a bit. File or grind a small amount off the back hump, and it should go in nicely, (remember small means small) Mine work flawlessly now.

Masen had a batch of 10rd magazines with the lock tab mismounted and they would not fit or feed properly in some (but not all newer series minis - this according to Masen staff). I got received one, called and was told above and to send it back. Masen replaced it as soon as they received a new batch. I have five 10rd blued mags and they all fit and function flawlessly including locking open the bolt on last shot. I keep them loaded and have had no problems with the springs as yet.
