I could use some advice. Here's the deal...

I put together a model 1 kit using a rock river lower. 16" barrel 1-9. 2-8 x40 tasco scope ($65.00) on a flat top with a riser block.

My smallest group at 100 yds is 8-10"! (using a rest). I know I'm not Mathew Quigley or anything, but I've been shootin since I was 8.

Its the second scope I've put on the gun so I kinda rule out the optics.

Anyone else experience this?

First I plan to shoot it without the handguard on (floating) see if that helps. I've also been reading about lapping the barrel and I might try that too. Beyond that, I'm out of answers.

Oh yeah, Its wolf ammo. I know its not the best, but still....Its gotta shoot better than that. So the first step is get some decent ammo.

Total rounds through the gun: ~100.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

If the scope is working, not loose anywhere, and you can shoot one hole at 25 yards with 5 shots, we will exclude it.
Not sure if its the wolf ammo or not. My Oly AR15 will not shoot wolf at all. I use Black Hills and really like it. My groups at 100 yards are in the 1 1/2" or smaller groups...and that is double tapping each time. (Tatical shooting). One thing that I did that also may help you is the trigger. I did install a two stage bushmaster trigger. Wow what a different. If your sand bagging your gun you should be able to get 1/2" groups. Three things that are important excluding the scope:
1. Trigger
2. Ammo
3. recoil spring or pnuematic buffer

I purchase a pnuematic buffer. This makes my weapon react like a bolt action rifle. Never feel any kick and that bolt slams shut like nothing else.

That thing should do better than that even with Wolf ammo. To bad you don't have open sights to try. I'd get some different ammo and double check my mounts. Maybe get rid of the riser mount and put my rings on the upper. My AR's don't seem to be hard on scopes or rings, not that much recoil to hurt'em. I'd definetly be looking at the scope mount settup though.

thanks for the replies gentlemen,

the problem turned out to be a nylon insert in the riserblock lockdown nut. I removed it to achieve metal to metal contact and all is well. Apparently the reduced friction caused by the nylon allowed it to move a little even when torqued down. Now I'm gettin' 1.5-2 moa with wolf ammo. much better.
