Hi,I am a new member.I have been reading for awhile, but never needed any advise till now.I purchased a 10/22 at a gun show. The gun has a Clerke bull barrel, synthetic stock all SS and looks like new. When I went to shoot it would fire, rechamber but would not recock.I shot it today and I used some hotter ammo (stingers). They would not even extract.I went back to the remington ammo and about every other round it would eject the fired round and the next live round. The last shot I fired the bolt stayed open, the empty stayed in the barrel and the next round in the magazine tried to load.I dissasembled the gun twise,I am not a gunsmith but the gun shows no signs of any wear.Somebody told me that bull barrels should use low velosity ammo. When I dissasembled the gun I noticed the pin at the rear of the bolt has a plastic sleave.I don't know if this is factory or if this is a buffer. :usa:

Welcome to the forum wlarner. Congrats on your new purchase, sorry it isn't up to par, but maby we can help ya.

Stingers , are a hotter load, but the cases are a little long for your Bentz match chamber, they work fine in a sporter chamber.

Remington ammo, I've had similar problems with the golden bullets, the bullets have a heavy wax on the bullet, and on the end of the case which binds it in the chamber. Some of mine wouldn't even seat but 2/3 in to the chamber.

The plastic coated pin is a bolt buffer, its a gotta have item, it will save your receiver from destruction.

If I may suguest; try a box of CCI mini mags, and use a Ruger oem mag, not an after market one, lets see if this takes care of your problem. Sometimes its the simple things that get ya. If your problems still exist we will dig deeper.;)

The Bentz chamber is the match chamber for semi autos, it is tighter, than a sporter, and is more accurate. The only down side, and a small down side to a tighter chamber, being it is less forgiving on the type of ammo it will shoot well or cycle reliably. I don't mean it is so picky it will only shoot a few specific types of ammo, I mean there are a few it won't shoot or cycle, as well as the looser sporter chamber. Let us know how it turns out. As with any rifle, you will find a type of ammo that it likes best, when you find it the Bentz shines.;)

Well I got to shoot my 10/22 on Sunday,I brought plenty of different ammo, but had the same results.A freind of mine has a new 10/22 so we started disassembling and compairing the two rifles and discovered that mine had been worked on to the point that when the bolt came back the hammer would not relieable engage the sear.We installed his hammer in my rife and it functioned fine.I am thinking about purchasing a hammer and trigger combo, maybe an adjustable one,but don't know who to contact.I also own a mini-14 and probably need a recoil buffer for it.My groups ,with the 10/22 were dissapointing, but I think it was the tasco aimpoint and not the rifle.Any info would be appreciated. Also when I siad my barrel was a Clerke, that was no typo.I can't find anyone who has ever heard of them.

Hey wlarner. Sounds like you did some good detective work. It sounds like someone did a bad trigger job on your 10/22, but its easy to fix. You can get parts cheep at this site:

I am doing a trigger job on both mine. I got a volquartsen match hammer. It came with hammer shims, and 2 springs. Drop in parts makes it a smooth 2 1/2#. I paid $31 . If they didn't change the sear, you can get buy with just a hammer, and springs. The hammer at gunparts.com cost $5, but I believe it is stock. A good trigger job goes a long way toward improving accuracy. An adjustable trigger will cost ya some dough. I like a lite, smooth trigger. for me 2 1/2# is about right. I believe I got my vol. hammer from MidSouth Shooter supply.

I have heard of Clerke barrels. I see them in shotgun news all the time, they shoot in the .5" range at 50 yds with a scope. They are a good value, probably equal to Butler creek in quality.

I don't have the targets with me right now but I think one of the five shot groups I shot Monday which almost went into one hole at 58 yards were the CCI Std Velocity (major surpirse to me) and probably the worst group was the CCI Velositor, go figure???

I agree, get the trigger situation fixed first, then toss the Stingers.

Well I bought an Ultra Match hammer & sear kit from Volquartsen, installed it and today I fired it.Same results.I do not understand why my friends hammer operated flawlessly in my rifle.I did make a new discovery today though,I was assuming my hammer was not recocking, although I could not figure out how because for it to come back far enough to eject it would have already cocked. When I shot it today I noticed the trigger was hard after the fist shot, as before, like it had not cocked but when I put a little forward pressure on the trigger I felt it click, it would then fire but I had to push forward on the trigger before every shot. There is probably nothing wrong with my old hammer and sear.Could this be caused by some accessory I dont even know I have, remember I bought this rifle at a gun show.Any advise will be appreciated.

Sorry to hear your still having problems. I can duplicate your symptoms in my trigger group by keeping a heavy finger on the trigger . It sounds like a weak trigger plunger spring. Part #B-40. It may not have enough strength to push trigger fwd. You can try a temporary fix by removing the little spring, measuring it, then stretching it some, try 1/10". My Volquartsen hammer kit came with a new one. You can take your trigger group out, and keep your left thumb on the hammer letting it fall restraining it , to test before shooting. Let us know how it turns out.

No offense Cajun but I have had the best experiences with the rem gold bullets. I buy those in bricks at wal-mart and never have a problem. I had more problems with the equal quality federals. On the same note my 10/22 w/22" barrel shot well even after the 300 rds mark with these bullets. If anyone is wondering 22" barrel? No such thing. Ruger made some exclusively for Wal-Mart (Where I work.) with the longer barrel therefore making it a rifle not carbine. Think deluxe sporter w/ longer barrel and think beautiful since it only comes in stainless and hardwood stock. Almost did not want to fire it due to its beauty. I really need to find a used 10/22 for major tweaking. Or at least just the receiver then I can build from there. Of course the receiver is considered a gun by itself but maybe a gunsmith can order those specially from Ruger.

There is no offense. It just helps to prove each rifle is different, and what shoots well in one may not shoot worth a hoot in another. The big thing I noticed with the Rem GB was the vast difference in velocity from shot to shot. It had a std deviation of 36.95, where as the Win super x, Fed lightning, CCI Mini Mag, fired a std deviation of 13.22 to 19.98.

Go one step further, I took off that new barrel, and beautyful stock, to build my custom. I hated to do it. I kept the parts, maby one day if I can pick up a used one, maby I can switch some parts.
