Side-mount rail on newest Mini-14s?

Asked on another forum (no responses), so I thought I'd try here.

Can the older, side-mounted picatinny rail be used on a 5846?

Newer Minis have Ruger scope mounts built in.
That's definitely the way to go.

The mount you have pictured is for older guns without built-in mounts.
I put one on a gun for a friend and it is JUNK.
Ended up drilling and tapping two more holes in it.
As it comes out of the box it won't even stay on the gun, much less hold zero.

As to the second question, yes, it replaces that plate.
Hope that helps.

If you really need a rail, somebody makes (or used to) one that bolts to the Ruger mounts.
I think that would be a much better option.

My 185 series never had any other options for mounting a scope except either on the side plate or mounting in place of the rear iron sight.

My side mount allows me to use the iron sights looking under and gives a look like the Vietnam era sniper version of the M-14. It is aluminum alloy and does not add an excessive amount of weight. I don't remember who the manufacturer was, though.

I have had really good luck with mine and has always had an excellent repeat zero when reinstalling it.
