Yeah, my FFL dealer and I happen to have a good friendship. As such, he's shown me some of his SKS selection. In short, he's got quite a few of them.
Actually, he was great when I started getting "serious" about getting an SKS rifle. You see, he brought several different SKS rifles into his office for me to check out...2 Russians, 1 Yugo, and 1 Norinco. Of the four of them, I was most impressed with the Russians. And, that's what I eventually went with.
However, the Norinco he had was nice. It did not have a bayonet, but he claimed it was unfired. I told him to let me know if he was ever going to sell it. But, he sort of shrugged it off. No biggie...as now I'm getting a little collection of my own.
BTW, I just received notice from my FFL dealer that my second Russian SKS rifle just arrived in his hands, and it is ready for pick-up.
Yep, I've seen that message board. I'll probably become a member, but that would probably keep me away from here.
Honestly, I like going to the "Lets see your bubba / tacticals" thread. Of course, I like the classic SKS military look, but I can't help but get impressed by what some people do to their SKS rifles. I hope that doesn't brand me as "hokey".
With regards to your question, the first one I bought is a Tula '51. Off the top of my head, I can't remember what year the second one is, but it is a Tula. I'll post pics and details, once I get it.
I should have bought a case of SKSs back in the mid 1990s when they were $75 each.
Part of the problem is the value of the american dollar. Just about all imported goods have been going up in price. Academy sports and outdoors used to have Monarch 7.62x39 and 223 for $1.99 - $2.99. And now its $5 - $7.
I dont think that normal inflation has doubled the price, there have to be other factors in play.
And ammo to feed it was $39 a thousand, stacked nicely in a ammo can all in stripper clips and Mak-90's were less than $150

....
If we are just talking about $, there is no need to look that far back....
about seven years ago, "as new" AMD65 kits were everywhere for $120 a set "shipped to your door". Then 2 years later the supply dried up and price went to near $400. One range guy I knew said "if I bought a truck load of AMD kits back then, I'd be rich!".... well, when he was saying that, "as new" Romanian G kits were $115 "shipped to your door", from many vendors, somehow he did not "buy a truck-load of G kits"..... within 3 years the G-kit supply dried up and the price went over $300 and stay there till this day.
I guess the history repeats itself all the time. The main question is, do we have enough spare cash laying around and storage room in the basement?

I remember when I was a kid the local gun shop had a metal trash can full chicoms for $50 a peice. I payed $129 for a yugo when they were as common as weeds.
These days If you can score a C&R rifle for around $100, buy two!
Sks are still $150 for standard Chinese and down to around $275 for Russian here in western NC. Dealers are still asking $250 plus for all. I advise anyone check in your local newspaper, yard sales and of course flea markets. Sks rifles along with all others are still out there and people will accecpt anything you offer if they are needing money. If nothing else simpleplace an add in in your local paper stating what you want and what you are willing to pay.
Sorry, I don't like the SKSBOARDS.COM,I find the group of people over there very clanish, and not a generaly nice group. Was a member over there 5 years BEFORE I became a member HERE.I am a gentleman and do not want to go into details.

I've tried to pm a few people at "SKS..." to find out what state they live in, and it is verboten. No profiles can be checked.
What are the moderators so paranoid about, if people there are law-abiding citizens?
One of the members reminded me of the Berkeley CA "professional anarchists" when he stated that "all policemen are thugs".
Maybe that type of attitude explains some of it.
