Tapco is the best way to go other than the 10 round stock magazine. I have three and they all work great. Mostly good feedback on them.

I've about a dozen of the Tapco 20s. They all work flawlessly in my SKS.

SKS Detachable magazines --

Hi:
I have 2 Tapco 20 rnd mags and have been very happy with them. You
need to open the bolt when you put the mag in the rifle.I bought a Chinese
sks with a wood stock that came with a 30 rnd steel mag and it was much
more thinner than a Tapco mag.The steel mag wobled all around the Tapco
fit great.I would not pay more than the list price for one 20.00.Look here for
a fair price it looks like the have black, flat earth,OD green.

I did the bolt modification on mine. The Tapco mags can be put in with bolt open or closed now. Simple modification. Took me about 10 minutes with a dremel and grinding wheel. Let me know if you are interested. I'll send you the link.

Look for a fixed 20 round Chinese mag. They work flawlessly. Load from two strippers and have 20 rounds at your disposal with out a crazy long mag hanging out the bottom like with the duckbill mags.
I looked at a ton of different mags and even the sks d/m configuration and I still like the 20 round fixed best.

I love my two SKS's but I realized when I bought them that they're not AK's and I've never tried to make them into one. Now, I understand personal preference and tricking out a firearm "just because" sometimes but the one thing I probably wouldnt jack with on the SKS is the magazine. Change the stocks, sights, add a muzzle brake/flash hider, optic and whatever else but the current detachable mags for it are clumsy and hard to change. I wanted higher capacity and managed to find one of the Chinese fixed 20 rounders for my full sized one. The compact "paratrooper" still has the original mag.

Now if someone could come up with something that allowed it to take standard AK mags I might be interested but that would involve lots of machining. IMO, if the rifle is more of a toy then a serious go to weapon, then play away and hang whatever you want to on it and have fun. If an SKS is your SHTF rifle, stick with the factory mag and get good with stripper clips.

It is my understanding from spending too much time on the SKS Boards, that the mag well for the standard SKS is too small to take AK mags. There are systems either available or in development that will allow for the use of "different" mags without the duckbills. But, they have not yet met with much aplomb or acceptance.

It only takes me a second to insert a Tapco mag and return to firing. It takes me just as long for my Mini-14.

I have two SKSs. One is original and will stay that way. The other is a bubba. I'm very happy and fond with the both of them and wouldn't even consider getting rid of either.

Yes, they do get alot for those detachable SKS mags but I never purchased any direct from them. I bought all of mine, 5 round, 20 round and 30 round on internet auction sites and didn't pay over $15.00 for any one of them. :-)

OH, btw, they are built tank tough and function flawlessly

Are any of these mags considered pre-ban? If yes, how do you tell?

None of the ones I have acquired have any marking as to date of manfacture. The ban on hicap magazines ended a few years ago so it is really a mute point ... unless there is some particular reason for asking.

Where are you guys finding the 20 round fixed mags? Those sound interesting. I've had alot of feeding issues with the current SKS replacement mags both steel and composite. Tore the lips off of one of the Tapco mags. If you can find any of the old "U.S.A" brand mags,(not National) those are great.

I have 6 Tapco 20rnd mags for my Norinco...and I think they are crap. Only 1 of them work because I left them loaded...and the feed lips cracked on all of them except the one kept locked in the gun due to the bolt taking all the pressure off the mag. Yes they did all work flawlessly at first...but what good are having detachable hi cap mags if they are not built well enough to store loaded? I am going to check out the hitech mag to see if they are worth a crap.

In all of my experience with aftermarket SKS mags, the only ones worth a crap are the old U.S.A. brand. (Not "National" brand.) The U.S.A. mags were stamped with their logo towards the bottom on one side of the mag body. They really worked well. Sadly, we're flooded with really crappy mags today. Everybody trying to cash in. The synthetic Promags I bought sucked. The metal Nationals sucked. The Tapcos also sucked. I tried these mags in all of my SKS variants, (Chinese, Russian, and Yugo), and had the same results. If you can't round up any of the old U.S.A. mags, I'd just stick with the box mag and stripper clips. I got tired of messing with junk after so long.

Installed the Home - TheSKSmagAdapter over Thanksgiving. Function checked it with 3 TAPCO 20rounders (with the duckbill cut off) this past weekend. Used Wolf hollowpoints - no problems at all. If it hadn't worked it would be easy to restore the SKS ('53 Russian) to original specs. Well almost - you do have to remove some wood from the mag well area, but from the outside it looks the same.

The ergonomics of not having the duckbill (for me) are better. The modded mags rock in like an AK.

This is a good anwer. The 20 round fixed without the star on the side work the best.
