Why do people leave gr. launchers on Yugos?

Is it only fashion, to leave the gun unaltered? Removing the blade bayo and launcher would make them much more practical. A compact Yugo Mauser might be just as handy.

If not, then it must be difficult to remove it (would hurt resale value), or not quite proper based on imported combat rifle regulations?

They seem clumsy and unnec. heavy compared to my sleek Norinco, but in the distant future might consider one at the right price if our next President avoids any stupid and reckless decisions regarding guns or ammo.

Fortunately, it seems, most SKS owners don't want to screw their SKS's up.

I do not currently, nor do I intend to own a Yugo SKS, but if I did, it would be unaltered.

I own a Yugo M59/66A1 one of the best and most accurate semi-auto rifle I have ever had especially for a $149 rifle, even more so when I shoot reloads in it,the thought never crossed my mind to start stripping parts off of it the day I got it,it not and Ak and all the junk parts most people put on one to make it like one are better spend on either more ammo or another gun. The Yugo is a little heavier that the standard SKS but I like that aspect of the rifle.

Also the grenade launcher is a 922 compliant part on the Yugo M59/66,you just can't take it off and be done with it. Once you remove a compliant part on and SKS you have to replace it or enough others with US MADE compliant parts to have 10 or less of the original imported parts that came on the rifle.

I just like my rifles like they were made,if I don't like that I just buy something else. Besides the grenade launcher is what set the Yugo M59/66 apart from every other SKS,would you cut the tail off a pointer hunting dog as soon as you brought it home just because you weren't going to use it to hunt with.

How would I be able to launch grenades then?
(Sometimes the grenade launcher distinguishes my rifle from others on the rifle rack at the shoots and makes it a cinch to ID, that's almost enough reason to leave it there alone.)

I'm kind of a fence-sitter on this one, cause I agree with all of you. Although a bayonet and the grenade launcher add extra "unnecessary" weight to the gun, I think they make the rifle look distinguished among others. I have a Yugo 59/66, and mine didn't have the grenade launcher or bayo with it. Now that I think about it, I don't recall it even having bayo lugs on the end. I'll have to look again... Either way they're great rifles nonetheless, just whatever floats your boat. I personally just like the gas shutoff valve on the yugos.

Agreed!
Kind of nice to be able to turn your SKS into a bolt gun. You can retain your brass on test loads, shoot underpowered loads (w/o smashing the brass), shoot light cast loads for silhouette shoots etc.
Amazing, huh!

If you don't have a Yugo or you still want to keep your rifle in semi auto mode but not send your good brass into the next county you can do the SKS gas tube mod. I wouldn't do it on the original but if you have or can find an extra tube new or used its fun to play around with.

The two holes further back don't allow enough venting, if they are enlarged? I guess the idea is to bleed gas pressure at the start of the piston's movement?

Are you kidding? It's a grenade launcher. Why wouldn't I want it on there?

I'm having these same thoughts. I recently got a Yugo and was wondering about removing the GL. I'm not all that concerned that the gun be in its "original" form, simply working. I'd like to shorten it a little from original form

I'd like to cut the barrel off about an inch or so behind the GL, but leave the front site box piece there. I've got a friend with access to machine shop, just not the time or guts to go through with it yet. ( i know, i'm the typical "bubba" )

I know if you hack too much off the end, then cycling problems are likely, but i don't want to take off but about 3-4" I don't think that would be too much

I own a yugo, and have been looking for the inert grenades that they sell just for practice. How many other rifle do you have that with the push of a button, you can launch a grenade? Or golf balls?

Its something unique to the yugo sks & I wouldnt want it any other way.

I thought about removing the G/L from my first 59/66 A1, but figured it was better to leave it as-is. I have others to choose from if I want something more compact and handy. I managed to find a cherry M59 at Cabela's a couple of years ago and even though it's beefier and heavier than a Chikom or Romy, it's still a happy medium since it doesn't have all the extra things that come on the 59/66's or A1's.

If you'd rather have something more plain, just get a Chikom.

not to mention the grenade launcher does double as a very effective flash hider. take a model 59 and 59/66 and shoot them at night you'll be glad the 59/66 has that ugly trot line anchor on the end of it. it cuts muzzle flash down to nearly nothing. but then nobody cares about that since its obviously more important to have a rifle thats 3 inches shorter so that you can get on and off the Jon easier without snaggin your drawers instead of not being blinded by your muzzle flash in low light........

might aswell take a hack saw to it and recrown the muzzle. you think its ugly with the grenade launcher just wait till you get it off. you'll wish you just took a hack saw to it to begin with. the attached picture is what the muzzle looks like with the grenade launcher removed.

The yugo looks awesome without any modifications. Here's my M59/66A1 unissued. I have since applied some finishing wax and buffed the stock and it looks really nice. Will have to take some more pictures.

Well, since I got my Yogo SKS I purchased one of those golf ball launchers for it. So now it sits in my golf bag in lieu of my driver. You would not believe how it has improved my game.

that golf ball launcher is a blast even with just blanks should try to get actual grenade launching rounds adds about another 150 yards. and if ya can find a rifle grenade attachment for a M-1 garand and use the golf ball launcher with it and a actual 30-06 grenade launching round its absolutely insane only downside you rarely find your golf balls.
