choosing a lever gun

I would like to purchase either a 30-30, 44 mag 0r 357 mag. Be using to hunt deer and small varments, any suggestions on which would be the best choice. Also is there any real difference is noise between any of them.

I have a Marlin 30/30 Model 336 that I like very much. I prefer the Marlin over the Winchester because the Marlin is a side-ejector. This allows you to mount a scope directly on top of the gun, plus the ejected brass doesn't hit you in the face or on top of the head. Good luck.

More power and range with a .30-30 . Better chance to catch one on sale or a good price for a used one .

The .357 Mag will probably be cheaper to shoot , especially if it will reliably feed .38 Special . Quiter too .

I have the .44 Mag also , no doubt , more power than the .357 Mag .

But , consider stepping up to .45-70 . Not that $$$ to shoot if you reload home cast bullets . :-)

God bless

I dont think you can go wrong with either caliber. Hard to beat a 30-30 though.

I have lots of lever guns from Winchester and Marlin. I dont scope any of my Winchesters though. If I want a scope I get a Marlin.

I have the Rossi .357/.38 Puma. Extremely fun gun to shoot, plus cheap ammo.

The only drwawback is the small pistol cartridge translates into a small loading gate that's tough on the finger tips, so for that reason one of my next projects is obtaining a similar lever gun in larger caliber, probably just .44 simply for the larger loading gate.

I have the Marlin 444 & 357 that I cast bullets for. The 357 goes with me to the range a good chunk of the time, it's fun to shoot. I've also used it for close range deer hunting. Also had a Marlin in 35 Remington that I should have hung onto.

You can't go wrong with the Marlin. My pops has one in 35 Remington and it is one of my favorite guns to shoot. He also has a Winchester in 30-30 but it does not feel as tight as the Marlin.

You can take the loading gate our of the rifle and trim down the flat spring and make it much easier on the finger.

Thanx, interesting tip, but I was refering to the narrow opening/sharp edges of the .38-sized loading gate, and it's effect on the fingertips as you load fresh rounds, and why a larger caliber would be easier.

Try and locate a Winchester Trapper in .357 Mag... I love mine.

Noise? Virtually the same.

The .357 is a little light for deer, the .44 should be fine. The 30-30 has the advantage of having been around for so long that most any gun store should have ammo.

As mentioned in posts above, the Marlin (I believe 336) in a .45-70 would be one that is too heavy for varmints, but would be VERY nice to have should something on four legs try hunting you (also quite effective for two legged varmints in a car ).

I have a Marlin in .41 Mag (VERY hard to find) that is really a lot of fun to shoot. Unfortunately, if you don't already have one, you are not likely to find one.

Least expensive work horse = 30-30.

I'd go with 30-30. Marlins are nice, but I'm nostaligic for a winchester 94. Personally I wouldn't it scope cause the ballistics really don't marit it. I shoot 170 gr FP and have mine sighted in at 150 yards. Anything past 200 yards and the ft-lb drops under 1000.
you could go with a 45-70 but from my experacnce 30-30 is cheaper to shoot.

Fine rifle there wy_daveh. I think one of those would look nice next to my Win 94. Very nice indeed.

You may want to reconsider the "and small varmints" part. Any of these will vaporize SMALL varmints. Anyway, I like the marlin.

• .357 gives a limited range for a good humane one-shot kill on deer. All three offer a very wide range of bullets choices. I do think from those, i;d choose the time-proven .30-30 chambering.

• Noise? When at the range, use ear protection. When in the woods, you can as well but for many folks, that woods shot isn't even heard by the shooter.

That's a great cartridge for comfortable shooting, and especially for ladies and others who perhaps are recoil-shy. I have an 1894 Marlin in .44 Mag that does really well even with heavy mag loads but for pure enjoyment I use those specials.

We also have three .30-30's (Winny '94, Marlin 336CS and a revelation 336 / made by Marlin) that are great, reliable and reasonable poweful rifles.

If I chose only one, it would be a .30-30 and be between the Winny and the Marlin. One's more handy and holds 1 more round. The other's beefier and has side-eject if I need a scope (don't care for side-mounted scopes myself).

Been thinking about that one too. It may be a while before I can sneak it into the safe though .
