Armalite AR-7 vs. Springfield M6 Scout

Despite the fact that neither of these guns are currently produced by the companies that designed them (hell, the M6 isn't produced at all), I'm very much intrigued by the small compact survival rifles.
In a world obsessed with stopping power, magazine capacity, and looking tacticool - it seems odd that anyone would ever even consider a wimpy little rifle.
But for less than $300 I can get another rifle, and one that I think is still very useful.

Which one of these has the serious advantage?
The magazine capacity of the AR-7 and the semi-automatic function?
Or the over-under ability of the M6 to use .410 shotshells?
Am I just kidding myself with novelty guns, and would be better off buying a 10/22 or .22LR pistol?

Your right saturn9 Armalite doesn't make the AR-7 any longer but Henry does

I think you pretty well defined your need/want by this statement.

Nice package, hard to beat for small stowaway floating survival tool. Package can take a licking and keep on ticking. Big plus is that it is self contained & light weight (2.5Lbs)

It's a tool, get the right tool for the job. Define your job/need parameters. Define the advantages and benefits of each and how they fit into your need parameters.

Most m6 scouts seem to be going for over $500+, there is one on gunbroker now going for $650 with 9 bids and 5 days left, it has a buy it now for $1100, a little pricy if you ask me. But evidently worth it to the right person.

The handi rifles also offer switch barrels made by H&R.

Here is another option Rossi rifle switch barrel, 20 guage shotgun, 22lr & .243 barrels.
As well as a 22lr &.410 combo youth set and some other shotgun caliber combinations.

Ain't it great to have choice.
Best O' Luck

Hm...while certainly looking like a quality firearm, it definitely doesn't have that quick compact and stow feature that the other two do.
However, their prices are really quite good (I'm currently drooling over that .50cal muzzleloader). But if I'm going for a full size survival rifle, I'd likely mosey over to Marlin and pick up a .45LC lever action.

I'm almost thinking a .22 pistol, and a revolver capable of .45LC and .410 shotgun would be more advantageous and certainly take up less space.

Don't overlook the Marlin "pappose", another .22 semi-auto take down rifle.

case for "Papoose' floats it also. I have both '7' (US Survival) and Marlin and slight advantage to Marlin. with scope fitted to both no clear advantage with suitable ammo.

Smile AR7 versus M6 Scout

I have 2 M6 Scouts (.22lr & 22 Hornet) and a AR7. I am not impressed with the AR7 and would not buy another. It is poorly made and feels cheap. I love my Scouts, well made and shoot well. GREGG

Is yours the Henry? Because I've heard that the original ones were a little on the cheap side. Thanks

It is the Survival Arms brand. Sloppy threads on the barrel and the mags don't work well.

I have the Scout in 22 hornet. Alot of folks have a hard time with the unusual looks, but I love the gun. .410 gives a great deal of versatility, and the Hornet is more capable than most people give it credit for. The tough part will be finding one now that Springfield has stopped importing it.

Sadly, I have no experience with the AR-7, so I will not comment on it.

The ruger 10/22 is inexpensive, and there is actually a takedown stock you can put on it that give you the quick takedown option.

I am actually getting a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 in 9mm. It folds in half and takes glock 17 33 round mags.
