I went to the range today with my ex-Emt partner Robert Thunder Hawk and we had a great time, got to shoot my Modernized Mosin Nagant (7.62X54r)and was having a blast hitting 6" groups @ 100 yards.
It was the first time my shooting partner fired my Mosin and now it looks like I am on the hook to build one up for him, I fully expected that because I know he likes the heavy caliber rounds as much as I do.
Then I switched over to my bolt action Marlin Xt-22mag and we decided to make it interesting, we set up the "Dirty bird" splatter targets (The hostage taker style) out to 100 yards, the idea is to hit the bad guy (shown in black) without killing the hostage (shown in red) and with the Marlin we were saving the hostage every time, well, almost, my Buddy did nick one ear of the hostage but he would have lived with out any hearing loss and would have still been able to wear sunglasses...LOL!
(The pic of the target is not the actual one we were shooting, it is a stock photo off the web to show what type we were using)
After a while we began "Calling our shots" before pulling the trigger, like calling your shot in a game of pool, I would tell my spotter that I was going to put a round in the center of the throat, or through the left / right eye and so on, I hit 10 out of ten and Robert hit 9 out of ten, I think he missed one because he jerked the trigger on his first shot.
As I was enjoying our time together I began to think of the significance of enjoying a day of shooting on the 4th of July, what a great way to celebrate our freedoms with some good old fashioned target shooting, a true expression of freedom indeed, one that I hope many generations to come will enjoy as well.
Since it was my turn to go to his range I had a hours drive each way and I cruised along in my pick up listening to some good old Neil Young with an ice cold orange crush in the cup holder, boy it just doesn't get any better than that for me, Now I am off to a cook out with a large group of Native people from about 6 different Tribes, I do think this has been my best 4TH celebration to date.
I do hope ALL my Armed Brothers here have the opportunity to enjoy this day as much as I have, Happy 4th my Brothers !!!
