while I don't compete in three gun or sass-I have several combos in several calibers.>22lr,9mm,357mag,.44mag,45acp.All of these are rifle, pistol, and derringer! One box of ammo for any three gun combo.Just makes sense.

Well, cmr314, you saved me from posting pics. My Marlin is exactly like yours and the only difference in my Vaquero (other than the fact that I only have one) is that mine has rosewood grips from Eagle Grips. I haven't gotten into CAS yet but that was my intention when I recently bought the Marlin and Ruger. We're in the process of building a CAS setup at my gun club right now. Sounds like it'll be a lot of fun.

The gun club I'm a member of has CAS and I was considering getting involved in it. I looked at the 1894 Marlin and the Ruger Vaquero in 38 special / 357 mag as my equipment. I don't know if this is the norm, but at our club's cowboy shoots, they also have a course of fire for shotguns. So I'm really up a creek. I gotta spring for a lever action rifle, a single action six gun, and a shotgun I guess one should be wary of picking up expensive hobbies

Winchester 94/GP100 - .357

The winchester was dead on accurate out of the box... first round downrange literally right dead center at 100 yards... my buddy said I should "never shoot it again!" well... no...

It did take a few hundred (?) rounds to loosen up enough to eject cases as I would expect. My absolute #1 choice in long arms at the moment.

Also have a 22 henry... great rifle and a 22 Hi Standard revolver... Good sheap fun

They replaced the 1873 with the 1892 as the 92 has a stronger action with the metals they had available at the time.

My personal combo is a Winchester 94AE Saddle Ring Carbine in .45 and a Ruger OM Vaquero Sheriff's model in .45.

Don't worry if you don't have all of your guns yet. If you show up at a match, somebody will without a doubt loan you a shotgun to use. Watch your local gunshops, as you can normally pick up a used SxS fairly inexpensively.

I'm actually not too worried about the SxS. One of the gunshops around town has a really nice, brand new Stoeger 20 gauge coach gun for $400. I ought to be able to get a good used one for cheap.

No, what I'm worried about is finding a 38 / 357 lever gun and 2 38 / 357 single action six guns without having to take out a loan. The Marlins are pretty pricey. The Rossi is more affordable but I don't know anything about them as far as quality. The cheapest single action in 38 / 357 I've found is the Ruger Vaquero. I trust Ruger firearms, but those are still going for around $500.

Stock?

Anyone know here I can find a custom stock for my marlin 1895? Something with nice grain and such. I have found a few drop in's but they are just like the factory stock.

I own a Winchester 94 in 45LC and two Uberti revovlers in 45LC, I use Hornady 255 Grain FP over 7.3 grains of Hogdon HP-38. That seems to work fine for me. However, I've been thinking of trying either Speer 250 JHP or Honady 250 XTP. Anyone have experience with those, and what powder are you using?

I've got a Winchester 94 Trapper and Ruger GP100. The Trapper wears a Scout Scope and both shoot 158 gn XTP reloads. The Trapper will knock a whitetail on it's butt at 100 yards and the GP will knock a Zombe on his butt at 25!!!

Love them both but my go-to is still my NM M1A!!!

Question

I had a Marlin 336 30/30 and a Ruger 30 carbine pistol. It was years ago and I believe they both shot the carbine round. If someone knows better, please let know. <><

The 30-30 and the 30 Carbine are not the same cartridge at all, other than both being 30 caliber. The 30-30 is a bottle neck case and the 30 carbine is a straight case. The 30-30 was never a military cartridge whereas the 30 Carbine was created for the M-1 carbine during in WWII for paratroopers, officers, forward observers, medics, engineers and motor crews. Never heard of a 336 in 30 carbine.

I would love to have a Marlin 1895SBL. It shoots the mighty 45-70 Gov't.
Though not as handy as a 44mag, the Magnum Research BFR in 45-70 is a big, fine revolver.

On the same note, two guns that I would not get, but are just as interesting:
The Marlin Model 410 lever-action shotgun and the Magnum Research BFR .45 Long Colt/.410 Revolver.

I have shot the Smith & Wesson 460 XVR and really enjoy it. It's too bad there is not an American-made carbine that shoots a .460 Magnum.

I must run with the wrong crowd, I know three guys with both the Marlin 1895 and the BFR. I'm the poor boy with only an 1895 and a Contender in 45/70.

I have no interest in a 410 shotgun, you can't do anything but shoot stupid birds with it and that means birds that don't fly, like grouse. I can shoot those with a 22 or a 20 GA.

As to a 460, why? I already have it covered with with my 45/70s.

I don't have a use for .410 either. I imagine they would be useful in a scenario when your town is overrun by rattlesnakes. I just posted them because they are interesting.

The reason I am interested in the 460 XVR is because it is so fun to shoot. A (mythical) levergun with a similar diet could eat .460 Mag, .454 Casull, and .45 LC. It would be nice to have that many ammo options.

It do make sense but for over 20 years now I've had good success on hog and bear (and a really nice elk !) with my Marlin 336 .35 Rem and a Redhawk .44 Mag. Just don't see any reason to change things. Just me though.

I have a model 94 Winchester Trapper and a Ruger Police Service Six. Both are .357 Magnum. Hornady's new "Flex Tip" ammo extends the range of these calibers. For example, .357 fired from a carbine has the same power at 100 yards as it does at the muzzle of a handgun. Hornady has published charts to prove this. Flex Tips are available in .44 magnum, .45 long Colt and .454 Casull also. It also is available in several rifle calibers such as 30-30 and 45-70. I find this to be excellent ammo.
