The turn pike is more than likely wrong. Most in the gun community, especially those at Savage, feel that the diameter of the Savage action to be too smll to handle a round as large in diameter as the Lapua. Unless they come out with a special action for just that round, it won't happen.

Savages model 116 is made to handle the 338 win mag-won't that handle the lapua as well?

Not the bullet diameter but the diameter of the case. The Lapua is .587" at the case head, not including the belt. The Winchester is .513" at the head. Many feel that less than 3/8" of steel between the shooter and 61k psi (what is left of one side of the barrel and reciever)is not enough. Especially with the occasional handload the may be too hot.
Call any of the major barrel manufacturers and tell them you want one of thier barrels in .338 Lapua. They may do it, but they will first suggest you go with a different chambering.
