I've read that the Army recommended/issued Lubriplate 130-A for M1 Garand's and M14's. Of course, given all the technology to come down the pike since then, there may be better options.
Synthetic Hi-Temp grease will work, but you need something that will stay in place with all the reciprocation going on. Not much beats 130-A!
