I've shot a ton of slugs through cylinder bore barrels but I just picked up an 870 with a 21" barrel with Remchoke. I'm going to pick up an improved cylinder or skeet choke for it for sporting clays. Would it be safe to shoot 1 oz. slugs through either of those chokes? (not at clays, of course)

IC is GTG with slugs. Don't know about the Skeet choke

Slugs are safe through any choke (even full) but accuracy tends to suffer as the choke gets more constricted.

You can always get a rifled choke, too. I put one in my 870, groups size is 1/3 what it was with IC.

You can shoot the foster slugs through any choke up to and including a full choke. I would not shoot them through an extra full turkey type tube. A rifled choke tube can and does help with slug accuracy but will destroy buckshot patterns. My HD shotgun is an 870 20in rem choke barrel with a modified tube in it. It gives me the tightest buckshot patterns and will do a fair job with slugs if they are called for. I patterned my shotgun with a bunch of different buck shot and choke tube combinations before I settled on this combination.
Every shotgun is going to be different in what it likes to shoot.

The best accuracy I ever obtained was fired through modified, improved modified and light full choked barrels.

My Remmy 1100 is CYL and throws slugs quite nicely downrange and puts out an 00B pattern from hell too. No complaints. It's not broken so I guess I won't fix it.

I bought a non-rifled slug barrel on sale in one of the many flyers that come to the door. Fairly cheap, rifle sights, and easy to change out in a 870. Sometimes it's just easier to not try to do everything with one barrel.

I bought the Remington 21in rifle sighted RC barrel for my go to 870. This barrel is about the perfect do all barrel. Its an old Wingmaster that was wearing a 30 in VR full choke trap barrel.

I had the forcing cone lengthened and patterned it with a bunch of different buck and slug loads. I found that with my preferred 00 buck loads a modified tube gives me nice tight patterns out to 40 yards or so. Slugs I can keep on a 10in paper plate all day at 50 yards. Now screw in a extended rifled tube and it clover leaf groups at 50 yards and keeps them on a PP at 100 yards.

It also can be a fairly good bird and rabbit getter though I prefer a 26 or 28 inch barrel for hunting. I have taken it to the trap range and with a full choke tube had a few good rounds with some of the regular trap shooters.
