18 or 20 inch "Coach" gun?

Well, I'm having Gundoc cut down an "utility" 12 ga shotgun to a coach gun length. It is one of the Spartan doubles that Remington imports - and is kind of perfect for this role with the exception of it's current 28 inch barrel. My intent is to use it as a home defender/truck gun. I've seen 18 and 20 inch coach guns out there, in fact, Spartan makes a 20 inch. What to you all think?

Huh? Measure from the (closed) breachface / boltface to the muzzle, not from the end of a shell. IOW the barrel length includes the chamber area
The only exception to this is on a revolving chamber type weapon, and than you measure only the barrel itself.

The rear tip or front tip? Maybe there is a special rule for shotguns?

I'm pretty sure it is from the headstamp end of the shell, my Winchester and Mossberg home defense bbls only meaure legal that way and they came from the factory. Besides, if you measure from the crimped end of a shot shell would it be a 2 1/2, 2 3/4, or 3"????

I think so too - my order just went into Gundoc for 18.5 ... I'll let the pro do the measuring!

I'd say you made a good choice with the 18.5 inch. I recently bought a Norinco lever action shotgun and had it trimmed down to 18.5 inches. All I can say is wow.
I did tick off some friends when we were shooting clays the other day. As long as I got them close in I beat them hands down. That short barrel was wicked qucik on target.

Sounds like you will have yourself a good little shotgun when you are done.
BTW barrel length is measured on all guns from the closed breach face to the tip of the muzzle...

Might I suggest you measure a few revolvers?

I really like my Stoeger 'coach gun'. I passed up a good buy on a used Rem. 870 to buy it. right barrel improved cylinder and left modified choke. IIRC they are available cyl/cyl (no choke)
