Just got a marlin 795 and I am looking for a good and reasonably priced scope to throw on it. Please gimme your suggestions and if possible some reasoning behind them.
The Nikon Prostaff Rimfire scope is a nice, compact fixed 4x with good, sharp glass, parallax corrected to 50yd. It looks right at home on all but the smallest rimfire rifles and comes with tipoff rings. Price is right at $100+/-. Even Walmart has them (or used to). I've used them on Mini-30 and Win 94 .30-30 for hogs with no problems, so they can take some recoil.
I picked up a Nikon Prostaff 4-12X BDC because I shoot 100yds with my match 22 rifle.
That was a big mistake because I occasionally shoot at 50yds or 25yds and the parallax is set at 100.
A 4X scope will serve you well if you're hunting or plinking but might do better with an adjustable 3-9X. Yesterday I got a BSA Sweet 22 3-9X with an adjustable objective. Was very impressed and shooting 3/8, 10rd groups at 50yds.
Price was $60 at Dicks but I had a $15 coupon. They can be found in the $40 range at other stores.
