Ring Question

Need advice on a set of 1" QD rings that will mount on a picatinny rail. Looking for something that will hold up well but not break the bank. Will be mounting optics on a relatively heavy rifle with little felt recoil in .223. Any advice on rings to try or stay away from?

Good: Talley, Leupold, Burris, Weaver, names you know.
Bad: NCStar, "store brands", brands you've never heard of.
Generally, QD rings are not as reliable as those you have to use a tool to remove because of the design compromises required to make them easily removable. If you don't have to go with QD, you'll have a stronger setup. However, a set of good quality QD rings are better than a cheap set of no-name non-QD rings.
Without knowing what scope and what rifle, it's hard to recommend a specific set, but either Midway or Brownells will have what you need, along with reviews of the specific rings. The heavier your scope and the higher it sits, the more torque is put on the mounting system; with a light-recoiling .223 rifle, almost any of the "good" rings are appropriate.
You need not get Picatinny-specific rings. Most of them are "tacticool", and therefore, rather expensive. Most Weaver-style rings will work on pic rails. The key is to make sure the rings (especially the rear ring) are pushed forward to rest firmly against the front of the slot. Only after the rings are properly positioned on the rail should you snug them down on the scope tube.
