Do you mini owners with optics find it difficult to get a good weld on your stock? I am looking at all kinds of optics options, but am thinking this would be a problem with a factory wooden stock.
Depends on your optics.
If you go with a scope having a v. large objective bell, the required high (or extra high) rings may well lead to cheek weld issues.
Anything straight-tubed or having a 32mm or less objective bell can be mounted low enough that it's not an issue.
I have a Hogue stock with a Leupold Mark I 2-7x and other than having to mount the scope all the way forward in the rings, I had no problems with cheek weld.
When I was sighting the damn thing in, however, the screw that held the front ring on wiggled loose and was lost forever. That was a bummer.
I just tried my Mini 14 with a B Square side scope mount with 1 inch rings and when I tried to use the peep sight my ear muffs hit the wood stock. Had to go to plugs. I will have to look for my old ear protectors as I don't remember that happening years ago (first time i have shot the mini with scope in years). So scope seemed to work okay, but the iron sight is a problem with my new "ears" and that ain't no small thing to have a problem with.
Adjustable comb on the cheap. I use an Allen buttstock shellholder on my Target mini with Hogue stock and 50mm obj. glass. Just slip in pieces of split garden hose or rigid foam to get to desired height for good fit.
With the Millet DMS-1 on a rail with low rings, I need just a little higher comb, when I put on my Millet 4 X 16 X 56, I need to raise the comb a little more for the best cheak plant and sight picture.
The adjustables are the best way to go, just make sure you start with it all the way down when you drill the holes through the stock. John K
