okay so im new to the whole gun thing, i have a scope and was wondering if someone could explain to me MOA i know its Minute of Angle but how do you know to go up or down one on the scope?
Will, I'd suggest reading these two articles on the Chuck Hawks website, to give yourself some more background on optics. The one explains a general background on rifle optics, key terms and concepts, and the other explains Mil dot reticles, MOA, etc. Hope these help!
Your adjusting screws (under the turret caps) are marked. Going up (or down) from 0 to 1 (or whatever) will move the impact point 1 MOA. Scopes normaly have "click" detents that are in 1/4 or 1/2 MOA incraments (some have friction retainers, which allow minute adjustments).
As far as knowing when to go up or down one, shoot a group on target, adjust up or down the amount required to move the center of the group to the point you were aiming at ("zeroing" the scope). If you get into shooting longer ranges, you will learn to "adjust" the scope for the various distances (IOW you will create a "drop chart" that relates distance to the # of clicks required to obtane "zero"). Most hunters use the Point Blank Range methiod, which dosn't care where the "zero" distance is, as long as the bullet dosn't go above or below a certain distance from "zero" IE: with my rifle, +/- 3" means I can hold center on a deer out to 285yd (PBR = 285yd)
